Funnily enough Orwell , who worked briefly for the BBC Eastern Service during the War, found it very uncongenial , and didn’t approve of the beacon of liberty idea that surrounded its wartime role . It’s thought he based the Ministry Of Truth on the BBC a and that Room 101 was an actual room at the BBC. Of course during the war government censorship of BBC output was at its height so he may have got a rather jaundiced view . I suspect that the job gave him no real outlet for his considerable creativity, I’ve never understood why the BBC adopted Orwell as one its own. He absolutely definitely would not have obeyed its social media guidelines.

....Double Standards: “He has a perfect right to a private life but as soon as he knew this he should have withdrawn from all regulation of the press.”

....Whittingdale will present MOTD until Nadine Dorries is freed up ....

I wouldn’t rule it out . I’ve heard they are struggling to get presenters for Football Focus. That’s the thing about the sports mob : : they really stick together - united by their dislike of the powers that be.

Good point. I’ve lost count of the number of times people in sport say sport and politics shouldn’t mix before jetting off to a sports jolly run by a country with a very much worse human rights records than the UK’s. The Qatar intro done by Lineker was pretty much the first time Sport have explicitly criticised extensively a host country on air. Qatar’s handling of the immigration issue is considerably more harsh than the UK’s .

Then my apologies to OJ. Others do use the term "centrist" disparagingly!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Just tuned to Five Live for Fighting Talk - cancelled by participants in support of Lineker. Mark Chapman and Alan Shearer have pulled out of Five Live sport coverage due to start at 12. Curious to see what happens - I can't see that any self-respecting presenter will want to step into the breach.

From #115 of the "Axing" thread:

It is perhaps a shame that, unlike the situation with MOTD, if conductors and soloists refused to work with BBC orchestras to make a stand against the cuts, that would likely merely hasten the demise of said orchestras, and hence be totally counterproductive.
                    Quite likely...

...shame the same cannot be said of MOTD

                      Yes.
BBC working very hard to crawl an unhandsome / undignified road to getting a knighthood from this Tory govt, their apparent masters?
If they'd let it go, NONE of this would have happened, it would all have died down and been quickly forgotten. Instead, they have rubbed the sore very hard in public to stave off Tory dark-benchers until it all pulsed out blood.

Are they that determined to end their role as UK's No1 / loved / respected / valued by most media outlet?

Also OT, care home workers. Feeble shows of support for their freedoms,, and now we 40k more of them short.

                        These things are not divisible.

Lineker is within his rights, but badly compromised by Qatar .

It seems that Nadine Dorries wants to take over as MOTD presenter, having already suggested GL should go to another channel, where he will be “paid better”.

And Marjorie Taylor Green takes over next week.

BBC Wales is replacing an hour long football programme with a Classical music programme, celebrating 100 years of BBC in Wales.

                                Progress of some sort......
