Axing of BBC Singers and related cuts

Before the days of savable mp2s from DAB or various evolving versions of the iPlayer/Sounds, I regularly listened to Radio 3 concert broadcasts in the evening. I still listen to them, just not necessarily in the evening od broadcast.

Obviously people may well be doing other things in the evening - visiting friends, eating out, going to a concert, theatre, cinema and many other things. How far is it that people are simply joining the general trend and choosing to watch television instead of listening to the radio - even though they could also watch a programme on iPlayer at a time of their own choosing?

Like Bryn, I 'used to' listen regularly to the evening concert . Now I prefer my own choice of music.

I suspect the truth is that so many of us have simply 'outgrown' Radio 3. For me, though,the change in presentation style from the Roger Wright era onwards has been a big factor.

Far be it from me, but that might connect with some critics' verdict that R3 has been 'infantilised'. Possibly a bit harsh, but in the sense in which is increasingly used perhaps just.

The chat would be the half of it, for me; the other half probably consisting in my having acquired many if not most of my recordings of works repeatedly played on Radio 3: works, incidentally, which I would have first heard only by way of Radio 3. In among those were the larger numbers of C20 modernist compositions, from Debussy to Birtwistle (say), (and I'm not thinking of popular modern classics, eg The Firebird suite or Bartok Concerto for Orchestra, than get broadcast today, outside specialist "new music" programmes.

Just looked around the internet to see if there have been any developments on this since the May 'Alternative Funding' announcement - I can't see anything obvious. I suspect the BBC will be very happy to see that they are likely to get through the Proms without any embarrassing on air protests.
