Your money is at least safe and returnable.
Not exactly gambling if you can always get your money back. I've never bought one but I suspect most people do buy them in the hope that they'll win a lot of money - in the way they do football pools or the lottery. Greed is the lure, but that's not illegal.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I had miserable amounts of them growing up, as presents, I think, but went the whole £50k route when I had some money looking for a home and the scares about maximum £85k compensation were rife when it became clear how many 'banks' were the same bank.
I've done quite well recently (though never had a win as big as £1000; my biggest was £500 years ago), especially since the return rate went up:
      Sep 22: £50
      Oct 22: £25
      Nov 22: £50
      Dec 22: £100
      Jan 23: £200
      Feb 23: £100

I'm old enough to have belonged to the office Premium Bond scheme; 2/6d/12.5p per week until a whole premium bond could be bought. I acquired about 3 this way and still have them but haven't the faintest idea if my investment has ever been rewarded with a prize. Somewhat later I acquired a few more and unusually this month have won two £25 prizes. Let the heavens rejoice!

Here's an article about Premium Bonds from the Money section of today's Times:

Paula Bui, 50, from West Yorkshire, had Premium Bonds as a child, but hadn’t considered them again until 2020, when she was looking for an easy-access accoun

What a coincidence. As I was reading these posts, I opened a letter informing me of a £300 win on the premium bonds!

If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

                  A letter?
Don't you check each month's winnings through their app?
I get an email monthly (if I've won) too.
Maybe the letter has a cheque with it. I ask for all prizes to be sent straight to a bank account, but you can invest them in more bonds (up to the £50k limit) if you prefer.

I didn't even know there was an app.

They are actually my mother's premium bonds, which I now look after under Power of Attorney as she is in a care home. The winnings get reinvested in more bonds, and I suppose at some point may be needed to pay for care home fees. Other than noting that there has been a win, I don't do anything with them.
