A man of real principle, who treated people with respect at all times, including those who opposed him.

He was one of the defining figures of the Zeitgeist of that era at the end of the 20th century: Canon John Collins (CND), Bishop Huddleston (anti-apartheid) and Bruce Kent - all campaigning churchmen at the forefront of the protest movements which characterised those times.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

As an aside, I see in next week's RT that Richard Coles has now retired from the C of E, claiming the church has become more and more conservative politically and is not tackling the homophobia throughout its ranks. Justin Welby is certainly turning out to be the most lacklustre Archbishop of Canterbury for as long as I can remember.
