I'm posting under another interrogative thread to (sort of) apologise for the IF poem. The thread became more intensely political than I intended, and as a Host of this esteemed Forum I should have known better. My reason was as much the clever spoof of Kipling as for the content.

I guess the original IF thread has now been obliterated.

        Ah well ....

Going back to the start of the thread - what was the outcome? Business as usual?

Sometimes these posts are off piste and reappear after....... (well, consideration, moderation or whatever happens). Some of those occasions followed late night intemperance, on one or two occasions breathtaking intemperance - but the posts were removed after the thread appeared next day. I didn't see intemperance in the IF thread myself.......

When I have the feeling a thread might become one which formerly existed, I often take a PDF of the pages - but I didn't this time. Last I saw it wasn't inflammatory. Over at the Times, posting comments seems to cause an algorithm which seems to kick in whenever it gets into territory which might upset the hegemony of central office and xxxxxxx Research Group (fill in the cover name of whichever grouping you have in mind.

I do recall I asked for recommendations of places where civilised discussions amongst a civilised group might take place - if anyone knows one. Doesn't have to be folks with the same interests in music we have.

Would it be acceptable if we referred to "the government" "The PM" today's columnist in the XXX "writing on the subject of" and kept party attributions and names out of it?

These issues and concerns I would never have expected to arise in this country - including concerns over penalising those who exercise the right to protest, the impending attack on the judiciary, independence of the courts, observance of treaty obligationbs and rule of law. And yet others, of course. We know each other here - obviously some know each other very well. Bit of a shame if these issues can't be discussed - but if the same folks wanted to discuss them outside the forum, how would that be arranged. Please not a facebook group, but presumably there would be a social media vehicle for it.

I am comng to suspect that the true backers of Brexit actually desire this slow descent into a situation seen in for example Poland and Hungary - it would suit very much certain factions of the right wing and their supporters in the Press and other media.

FB is a far less convivial place to discuss such issues but for what it is worth, I copied the original Kipling parody to my FB page. It has gone down like a lead balloon. Only 7 reactions and no comments.

I still want to know what was the outcome of Bernie Sander's plea - though I can guess.

                        Another lead balloon, I fear.

I'd just say that For3 is intended to be a Forum to discuss music, especially that heard on Radio 3. It is good to go 'off piste' and chat about other stuff (eg on Ideas and Theory or Platform 3 where vegetables appear commonly...no jokes please!)

I think many of us are like-minded and probably agree with your last paragraph, CS (post#8).. However we (including me, a naughty Host) should perhaps try to find other online platforms for any strongly-held political views...and I agree also 'please not a Facebook group.'

To digress a little, it is strange how social media sites can attract the wrong sort of argument, i.e. people slagging each other off. For instance Mrs A. is very keen on wildlife, flowers, birds, etc. and frequently chats to others about such things and exchanges photos, some of which are taken by experts with fabulous results. But even here, disputes crop up from time to time...not technical ones, but personal ones. I find it astonishing. So here on our Music Forum we are lucky that on the whole, people remain civil...better now than in times past. Moderators need to be on the lookout for trouble brewing, and our Site is sufficiently small for the Hosts () to act when they/we think it expedient. Of course multi-national 'platforms' with millions (billions?) of users can't keep an eye on things...even if they have algorithms which are meant to work.

Bernie's support of a bipartisan attempt to block the sale of arms to Saudi Arabia failed in the Senate by 67 - 30.
