I’m hearing that The Last Musician Of Auschwitz on last night is an absolutely remarkable documentary.

Yes: a remarkable film, referring to many musicians and composers. The title honours Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, 99 and going strong, mother of Raphael Wallfisch.

Indeed, the name Wallfisch has always been key to memorable music-making. I recall Ernst Walfisch , on viola, and Peter Wallfisch the pianist.

          Available below:

It was hell. But music gave prisoners at Auschwitz a lifeline - and even a way to resist.

            It is.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I find it very worrying that to read that Trump wants to resurrect Guantanamo Bay for housing illegal immigrants. Each Democratic administration has attempted to close it and, according to today’s Times, it currently houses 15 prisoners. It can, according to Trump, hold up to 30,000 people.

Is this the start of building concentration camps? How long until other ‘facilities’ are built?

Now I’m not suggesting that it’ll necessarily lead to ‘death camps’ but the care these inmates are given, or not, may result in many deaths. According to the Times article, Guantanamo Bay is not fit for purpose and I don’t see Musk wanting to spend any more than is absolutely necessary.

What I find extremely concerning is reading the comments and finding many who think Trump is on the right lines and we should do the same thing here. I was sitting on the bus this morning and noticed a passenger reading the Telegraph where the headline was ‘Britains wish we could have more Trumpism here’.

              Very worrying times.

He'll probably change his mind tomorrow.

Andrew Rawnsley on “the Trumpification of British politics”:

Agreed. It just goes to show how far the "political centre" has drifted rightwards that I find myself in concurrence with Andrew Rawnsley!

I get how this happened, but PLEASE can we keep the Pres out of this thread and keep it about the Holocaust itself - or at least modern genocides.

                        Thank you.

No! That’s exactly HOW the Holocaust happened! Because people turned their heads and did nothing. Doesn’t it concern you that we’re watching history repeat itself in real time under our very noses?!

                            Thanks PG. My feelings exactly.

The Holocaust isn’t in the past is it ? It hangs like much of the twentieth century over us as a reminder of the depths to which humanity can sink.
On a positive note I have to say that , while “criticism “ is irrelevant the BBC coverage I’ve seen has been exemplary in tone and content - particularly the Voices Of Terezin on COTW - can’t recommend it too highly.

And isn’t there a precedent with genocide in the good ol’ US of A anyway when the pioneers attempted to eradicate the Native Americans by, among other evil deeds, providing blankets laced with anthrax? You think the incumbents of the White House weren’t complicit in this?

And this is compounded by an infinite number of Cowboys and Indians movies where the Natives are seen as the bad guys? Trump is simply repeating what his predecessors did.
