Farage is a barnacle and will be back as soon as he gets the chance.
Has anyone perceived a single Brexit benefit yet?

Rawnsley at his most magisterial - and most devastating......
Ministers say it is just teething trouble. To many businesses it feels more like root canal surgery without the benefit of anaesthetic
Keenest political eye out there....
One notes too, the UK's continued refusal to grant the EU Ambassador full diplomatic status... out of sheer Little-Englander spite presumably.
One wonders how many Brexiters voted for that.......even the Tory Baroness Hooper called it "gratuitously offensive..."....
God Knows where we're heading now....

But typical of the way the UK always interpreted EU rules**: The EU is not a sovereign state.
** Remember how the Department for Trade argued that the EU rules on the use of lead did apply to organ pipes when the EU commission said they didn't.It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

We no longer have voice or influence within the EU so - cruel irony of supposed Independence and Sovereignty - we have to be nicer to them now if we want to get anything out of them....but this government - as pure an example of Elective Dictatorship as you'll ever see - won't want to do that, causing all of us endless troubles for the sake of their own terribly flawed and dated, in fact mythological, nationalistic political philosophy.

And of course this administration doesn't even need the help of Brexit(or Covid) to wreck business. https://www.theguardian.com/environm...and-job-losses
Several firms not paid for the work they have already done so now struggling financially. A spokesperson quote at the end of the article says 17,000 grant vouchers have been issued; to put that in context the scheme was supposed to have benefited 600, 000 households(ie 600,000 vouchers) by the end of March this year. It has been extended to 2022, but given the number of contractors now deciding to(or have already) quit the scheme, or not signing up in the first place due to the admin load and costs of doing so, that may not make all that much difference.

I felt it was the same sort of tunnel vision which dictated that the EU was 'not a sovereign state' and therefore it is impossible to allow them a full Ambassador and the EU's UK Ambassador has been therefore stripped of full diplomatic status. As far as I can see, we had previously had a UK Ambassador to the EU (erroneously, I presume as the EU didn't suddenly stop 'not being a sovereign state' when we left). Pettiness and jobsworth bureaucracy by our current masters. Here endeth. It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. (Actually the FCO press release is carefully worded and refers to him as Head of the UK Mission to the European Union : it may be that wiki is a bit sloppy here... )
Mr Lindsay Croisdale-Appleby CMG has been appointed Head of the United Kingdom Mission to the European Union in succession to Sir Tim Barrow GCMG LVO MBE.
But then the press release for his predecessor refers to Sir Timothy Earle Barrow GCMG LVO MBE as having been our ambassador to the EU - so some sloppiness on the FCO's part -
Sir Tim Barrow was appointed as the National Security Adviser in September 2022. Prior to this, Tim was the Second Permanent Under-Secretary and Political Director at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Tim joined the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in 1986 working in the Western European Department. His first overseas posting was in 1989 as part of the British Days Exhibition, followed by Second Secretary in Moscow. Sir Tim is also the UK Sherpa for the G7 and the G20 His previous roles were: Head of Russia Section Private Secretary to Minister of State First Secretary, UKREP Brussels Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary Head of Common Foreign and Security Department Assistant Director, EU External Deputy Political Director Her Majesty’s Ambassador in Kyiv Representative to the Political and Security Committee of the European Union and Ambassador to the Western - - European Union, UKREP Brussels Her Majesty’s Ambassador in Moscow Political Director UK Ambassador to the European Union, and before that the UK’s Permanent Representative to the EU in Brussels

Not to us but...
Hornby and JD Sports among firms after space to offset port delays, extra freight costs plus new VAT and customs fees
From which this is worth noting
While around half are British companies, the other half are from places such as the US and Asia, who want a foothold in the EU, and have decided against locating in the UK following its departure from the bloc.

....it would seem that better supply of the Astra Zeneca vaccine to the UK has been helped by being out of the EU, ( in the sense that the EU contract has been heavily cut) but who knows how that will play out medium term? Not the sort of thing to point score over.
But trouble is on the way, I fear.

This episode will be an object lesson for future journalism on even handed ,( or otherwise,) reporting, where the full story ,rather than edited highlights, is important.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
