In some ways this seems like a retrograde step, but it may be necessary for longer term sustainability.

No more retrograde than wind turbines? Using an idea from times past and upgrading it using modern knowledge and adaptations seems eminently sensible to me if the end result is a solution to a problem and/or an improvement on the old version. I wonder if what might prove more difficult to cope with is the change to wind patterns in our current unhappy climate scenario. Altering course, especially for large ships, isn't an easy or quick business, so erratic airflows are unhelpful, however good the technology for plotting weather.
