    Week 32.
More than 700 deaths above the seasonal average in private homes, in one week. There were 9000 total deaths that week.

Now that is a really big story, that isn’t being discussed in the media.

... and hospital deaths are 725 below the 5 year average. This is pattern has been occurring for the past couple of months, a seeming shift of a significant number of deaths from hospital settings to private homes.

Interesting article with plenty of data.

Changing age profile of infections and improved care are among the factors driving a reduction in mortality rates

I seem to get some free access to FT articles. Not sure how though !

Try https://www-ft-com.libezproxy.open.a...c-2bd87ebb29d7 It worked for me. Otherwise, try an Internet search for the title of the article.

There is, perhaps, also the option of a one month free trial - though I failed to initiate one such some while back. Similar offers, and also problems with initiating trials or subscription offers, have applied for others, including the Boston Globe, NY Times, Washington Post, and Wired,

Are there any statistics out there for those who have recovered but are having severe long-term effects ?

If this study expects to recruit 10 000 patients that suggests 'quite a few' fall into that category. Then there are those who aren't hospitalised, and those suffering the long-chain form.
One of the world’s largest comprehensive research studies into the long-term health impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19) on hospitalised patients has been launched, the Health and Social Care Secretary, Matt Hancock has announced.

I've seen a newspaper item (Guardian probably, possibly Times) - there is definitely interest in the medical community in long term effect and how to rehab sufferers - I think from the perspective of whether its on NHS /Dept Health radar as to providing the resources. So there must be some statistics and investgations for reports.

Yes, we will probably see more deaths due to the lockdown (missed advanced cancer diagnoses, complications from postponed operations, etc.) than from the virus itself.
Sadly true, but I feel pretty sure that in the end nobody will be found to be culpable. Like so much else these days, the health of the nation has been contracted out and then sub-contracted.

Ah yes, Mark Woolhouse, the man who did a runner from Edinburgh to a small Hebridian island at the start of the emergency. I wonder whether he is also a climate-change denier?

                            He went before lockdown.
If I had a second home, I would have considered doing the same thing pre lockdown.

I suspect that he will be shown to be right about the calamities inflicted by the lockdown, though it is easy to be wise after the event. But we need to learn the lessons fast, try to restore some democratic accountability, get the NHS actually functioning, and try to salvage as many jobs as possible.

Substitute 'possibly' for 'probably' - a far better choice of word surely - and you see the government's and the nation's dilemma.

By not having a lockdown we'd have definitely had more covid deaths than excess deaths from other illnesses. Doesn't mean we'd have had fewer excess deaths for the time of year overall. It's unknown how many covid deaths we'd have had with that scenario. Many "Normal" hospital services were available during lockdown, this was not spelled out at first. That was a real mistake.
