Some figures in today's weekly ONS report for England and Wales caught my attention.

These figures are for w/e 12th June but the figures for the previous week are not dissimilar:

Deaths at home (not care homes):
    Total excess deaths
    923
    Covid-19 registered deaths
    51
    Non-Covid excess deaths
    872
    Deaths in hospital:
    Total excess deaths
    -503
    Covid-19 registered deaths
    665
    Non-Covid excess deaths
    -1,168
The excess deaths are the difference between the week's deaths and the average of the previous 5 years.

    "Non-Covid excess deaths" is my calculation: <Total excess deaths> minus <Covid-19 deaths>

    !!!!

This is obviously striking. It could well be that people are still very reluctant to go to hospital, even when, on a rational calculus of risk, they should. Though I suppose if the +ve home non-Covid excess is balanced out by the -ve hospital non-Covid excess then logic dictates that going to hospital would have done no good anyway.

Meanwhile, some of the "missing" non-Covid excess deaths in hospitals are probably and sadly accounted for by the "already dead prematurely from Covid". Total excess deaths for London have fallen statistically significantly below trend in recent weeks according to the ONS data IIRC.

I think it is a great pity that the hospital admission data will no longer be available as it provides one of the few reliable early warnings of any resurgence of the virus.

Well that'll be why then...Can't have the public knowing what's actually going on, they might make nuisances of themselves asking questions.

Meanwhile, on a somewhat lighter note... Herewith the results of some empirical studies into the risks of brass playing w.r.t. air expelled by the musician. Most easily digested by German speakers, but anyone will get the idea.

Why would that be a problem? This lot don't ever answer anyway, well hardly ever, and they manipulate things so they don't get asked questions they don't want to answer. If in doubt, lie, and pretend ignorance later, or maybe start with ignorance so as to avoid having to lie.

I am curious about the data re ventilator beds. The bed numbers seem to be going down slowly, but is there throughput? In other words, is there a flow through those beds, either with a good or a negative outcome, or do some people just stay in those beds for a very long time. If there's a significant flow, then obviously there is still a daily influx of really rather ill patients.

Very useful, since government representatives are always blowing their own trumpets.

There has been much justified criticism of the government's handling of the coronavirus crisis. Just for fun, could we compile a list of names of people who would have done that much better? I'll start the ball rolling by suggesting Rebecca Long-Bailey as Home Secretary, Diane Abbott as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Dr Phil Hammond as Health Secretary, and Chris Grayling as Transport Secretary, a post which he should never have vacated given his encyclopaedic knowledge of Burt Bacharach songs, particularly 'Trains and Boat and Planes' and 'Close To You' (well, not TOO close!

What antisemitic comments would these be then?

Oh, I would guess anything that isn't wholeheartedly Zionist, (as Starmer claims to be). I wonder if Long-Bailey will sue Starmer for slander. I'm no great fan of her's but reckon she should, as should Maxine Peake and, perhaps, The independent.

I would love to see a Downing Street briefing with Colonel Bloodnok ('It's Hell Up Here') flanked by Eccles (Minister for Lancashire and Cakes) and Bluebottle (Minister for Distribution of Sweets)

I mean, just how f***ing ( ) difficult is it to differentiate between comments about the malign actions of a nation state, and actual , real anti semitism.

                            Ask Andy Partridge.....

Lord, the student politics of the early 80s seem very far away......

Criticising the Isreali army is antisemitic - can someone please explain why?

I note that while the Israeli Police have issued a statement that they do not use the knee on neck technique, it was not the Israeli Police who were cited as influencing American Police. It was the Israeli Secret Service. Whether the claim re seminars was accurate has not as yet been addressed, as far as I have seen. I do not know whether it was true or not, and I suspect neither does Starmer.
