The only point that interests me about Tr*** is whether his disastrous COVID policy will kill off enough of his base to ensure he loses the election even if he’s forced enough people back to work so he can lie to his base about the economy. If that makes sense.

I do think there is far too much attention paid to him
but given the enthusiasm for him from the likes of BJ and chums one has to be very worried indeed

Reality strikes home...
I suspect quite a few folks didn't actually read what was involved, or if they did, didn't believe it. Agricultural work isn't 9-5 Mon - Fri commuter office job style.
The presence of Romanians flown in who will be sharing space won't help either adding fears over additional infection risk.

I do wonder, though, if attitudes towards those needing universal credit might change in current circumstances.

Listening to "Farming Today" this morning on R4 the farmer concerned had brought over returning eastern european workers before the lockdown, housing and feeding them at his expense. He said he absolutely needed a trained workforce or his business would fail - the machinery had its dangers and he had to be sure the workforce in that respect (no doubt others too) were reliable. There would also be jobs for UK workers and he was looking forward to having UK nationals more involved in farm work.
Over the years there have been stories about new employees failing to turn up after the first few days in this kind of work. Invoking the spirit of "We're all together in this" and "Dig for Victory" I suspect are not going to cut it. Community efforts to manufacture scrubs and shields are useful of course and provide good news stories but they will not meet the need. (However that infamous publication "Britannia Unchained" from the ERG type wing of the right - P Patel, Dom. Raab and Liz Truss co-authors with others) betrayed their sceptical view of the UK workforce - so what does this government expect to happen in reality. As opposed to their aspirational declarations at briefings whilst carefully avoiding hard facts).
The person "at" the select committee who pointed out the risk of the waves of outbreaks and high mortality was Prof Anthony Costello:
My overall impression of this government is of action too late and then too inadequate, and this on a vital threat to the nation. It’s a disgrace - as is the agreement of MPs and Parliament to go home and leave the government unaccountable. (BTW, remember Jeremy Hunt presided over the NHS in the years which formed its present ability to cope with this).
On the subject of PPE there are Hospital Managers say they will run out of the important all over cover gowns this weekend (unless some arrive on a plane and then get to them). All this while volume garment manufacturers are reporting that for some weeks they have tried to get sense out of government on their offer to produce PPE in the UK using their considerable (and presently unoccupied) workforce. But they have had no response, or no meaningful response. The civil service has been despised by this government of 10 years (P Patel gives it away) so perhaps there are too few of them. Or Ministers aren't exercising good judgement. We need the opposition (Labour, Scot Nats etc) to be taking them to task in Parliament (where evasive non-answers - which are all we get otherwise - surely are not acceptable). The opposition need to secure ACTION and real achievement in these respects. This, while we hear, today, that Health Workers (they're not all doctors and nurses) are being put at even greater risk by emergency relaxation of PPE protocols, when they run out of protecting gowns etc.
The engagement of Burberry and Barbour has all the hallmarks of spin and news management. Private Eye reported that Downing Street has re-hired Isaac Levido (protege of Lynton Crosby) who "managed" their last election campaign

What with the appalling IDS insisting the Government "outline the exit strategy" and local councils saying they are close to bankruptcy as a CV consequence (as if they weren't already...)...... it doesn't get any better does it.....?
God knows what the press conference will be like..... best accounts: John Crace.Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 18-04-20, 20:07.
