I think there is a (deliberate ?) confusion about between what is/are

"guidance" and "rules"

I hear spokespeople using these interchangeably ....

I saw that report as well, and to me the positive result for the reporter suggested that the test’s accuracy was probably a great deal lower than was being claimed by the company. The reason these antibody tests haven’t been introduced is that PHE hasn’t found one yet that is consistently reliable.

I watched the same report. The result reported made me wonder whether he might well fall within the "couple of points" you mention. I think it wise to take the view that a bad test is worse than no test.This point is being hammered home again and again on the BBC News channel.

Not much cheer for us in the Financial Times's international comparisons of statistics https://www.ft.com/coronavirus-latest London's daily death rate looks to be rising faster than New York's when it should presumably be flattening faster because NY is running a few days behind us. Of the few other 'smaller-than-national' stats given, only Washington State's death rate looks more out of control

Today's figures are:

The rate of increase of confirmed cases is slowly declining. Some hospital staff are now being tested, in addition to hospital patients, so the increase for patients only might well be less than the overall 13.2%.

The rate of increase of the deaths will relate to infections contracted 2-3 weeks previously so should soon start to decline (fingers crossed), though the actual number of daily deaths will probably continue to grow for some time.

This is actually a big concern, and one of the reasons there was some hesitation in implementing the lock down. People will get fed up and complacent, and stop complying before we have got over the worst, leading to a second wave of infections at exactly the time the NHS are running out of capacity. The good weather forecast for this weekend is bad news for the lockdown.

It was noticeable when we went for our daily walk today that there were more people out and about, and not all of them were observing the social distancing guidelines.

Very much so. If too many flout the instructions, expect a harder lockdown around the corner. I was speaking with someone today who has good reason to know that preparations are in hand (passes etc) for that eventuality

When he was asked about the 3.5 million antibody tests MH said he had ordered 17 million, not 3.5. (Pick a number, any number.) That's 17 million of tests which haven't yet been validated. Sounds good to me.

Tomorrow it will probably be 100 million antibody tests on order. (He likes that number.)

(Actually I suspect that there are provisional orders that have been placed - which will be only be confirmed if the tests prove to be accurate. Though MH seemed cagey when asked whether PHE had paid the manufactures any money.)

One piece of good news is that the England hospital admission data for 2nd April (reported in today's slides) showed a day on day decrease for the first time. It is only a small decrease but nevertheless it is a decrease: 11,589 to 11,309.

Of course it is unwise to read too much into individual figures.

The Guardian is also reporting that London’s intensive care units were expecting to be overflowing by now, hence the urgency in building the new hospital. However, they are currently
only 3/4 full, and the Nightingale hospital’s first patients won’t move in until early next week now. This is clearly good news.
