I turned my back to face away when I encountered that problem in town yesterday, but I was heartened by the number of people who did take the trouble to make the required adjustments. It's good that so many seem to have realised that head down on the phone is incompatible with keeping a distance, and nice to see rueful smiles while we do the dance, instead of tops of heads and blank expressions. For a good few folk I imagine it's been some time since they walked with their heads up and saw anything other than pavement and their own feet. Something I found interesting was that there was no way of predicting who would comply and who wouldn't.

As I headed down the road at the end of my exercise walk, my next-door neighbours and those living opposite them were seated on chairs out on the pavement, across the road from each other. I walked down the middle of the road and we all exchanged greetings. I know I have a folding garden chair somewhere but could not find it, so one of the neighbours from over the road produce a stool for me to sit on (leavng it in the middle of the road for me to collect). All offered to muck in and help each other as needed. Same time, same place next week . . .

When I was at school we used a ‘metre rule’. Maybe there should be a quick production of ‘two metre rules’ which could double as a walking stick for use on our ‘exercise walks’.

Your problem comes if they cough all over your clothes.

Hold a broom out at arms length. It's close enough.

Maybe research into teleportation will suddenly get a boost.

We are all to get a letter from the PM this week apparently.
“From the start, we have sought to put in the right measures at the right time,” Johnson says in the letter,
There may be a suitably amended version winging its way back to him from this address...

Well we were warned. Max Hastings. https://www.theguardian.com/commenti...-party-britain Too late now - but so far he hasn't managed to mess everything up completely. Perhaps he has minders keeping him in check - and needs them.

I think it's time the Poet Laureate produced something stirring to help a nation with a proud maritime past such as as we have to navigate these perilous seas in what is turning out to be a rather leaky overcrowded boat.
Apparently our letter from BJ is going to be a 'Q', even though we requested a 'N'.
There's going to be the most almighty row (I hope) afterwards when we get round to discovering why we were so unprepared compared with other countries.

Poet Laureates have not majored in producing stirring poems in recent years so maybe it is time!

There's already a row but it won't make a difference given that the longstanding plans for dealing with a flu pandemic were deemed 'too expensive' to implement in full, so the country was already at a disadvantage for dealing with a known pandemic risk let alone a novel virus one. Money (it's not even economics since preparedness is important for a country to continue to function economically and/or recover in a timely fashion) is the only consideration these days - who has it and is useful and/or influential to the government.
