Too many people are in denial. It is hard to believe what's going on, but I do. There are reports of doctors in the US working without adequate PPE, and of protocols being totally "relaxed" - for example ventilators transferred directly from one patient to another. This could be fake news - which no doubt POTUS would call out - but I fear this may very well be true. BJ is, as many of us are aware, often "economical with the truth" - but his recent broadcasts and exhortations to stay in, keep safe etc. do seem to me to be very sincere - and should not be ignored. If anything he has still underestimated the problems, but he is getting there.

For some people the measures to adopt will be grim, but nevertheless it will help if as many people as possible try to follow the guidelines. I assume that the golfers mentioned in the post above are well enough off to be able to afford a decent house, a decent car, decent holidays etc. Many of the people who wil be affected if this becomes as bad as it may do, will not have such a lifestyle. It is incredibly unfair of richer people to deliberately and unthinkingly (or even if they do think ...) act in ways which put poorer people who may be working very hard on their behalf, at risk.

Not for much longer, it seems https://www.bunkered.co.uk/golf-news...onavirus-fight

Perhaps golf clubs attract That Sort Of Person, wealthy and entitled (among all the rest of them, I hasten to add). I was under the impression that golf had been included in the exercise disallowed. Unless you happen to be One Of The Entitled.

Mrs CS is firmly of the opinion that playing tennis singles open air in the dry should not be risky, as long as the correct distancing is observed. And thorough hand washing/sanitation at the end. However, she agrees with her club that it sends the wrong signal to be playing, so it was stopped when the Stay Home message was issued.

We are advised its OK to work on the allotments - again observing the rules, and with particular attention to sanitising the padlock and gate handle and any taps used, and our hands again on exit. At least, working on an allotment doesn't carry the social message of the privileged at play.....

It does involve hand contact with the ball by both players, unless you have a very large supply of brand new balls.

If you don't play each shot with a new ball, then one has to trust that the opponent does not have the virus, or is not able to pass it on. One can't always trust one's friends, and some of them may be asymptomatic.

I agree it should be low risk, but if one is not supposed to shake hands directly, perhaps one should not be allowed to do it indirectly, via a tennis ball.

....Might go out into field adjacent....saw a golf ball in the dog shed this morning - that and a couple of walking sticks for clubs, should get the neighbours talking....I'm known as silly around here, so I'll maybe give em a laugh, with the right amount of seriousness in my addressing the ball, keeping my hands aloft after stroke....and bravado....of course....

More evidence, if any is needed, of our government's completely mistaken idea of the UK's exceptionalism.
I wonder if Mr Dyson's ventilators will proudly state (in blue): Not for sale in the EU.

If I was a patient, would I prefer to be on a ventilator made by an experienced manufacturer of ventilators or one made by Mr Dyson?

Not that there would be a choice.

Don't worry, they will have been following the best scientific advice.

After all, as BJ said a few days ago - Britain is leading the world in fighting Coronavirus.

Just when I thought BJ was starting to get some things right ....

If true, this is another story of appalling incompetence and misplaced priorities, but let's wait and see ..... if we're all here in a few weks time that is.

I've just returned from my daily exercising - a long forest walk, last most of the morning and afternoon. Although I hardly met a soul, so was socially distancing without being a threat or a victim, I wonder whether Boris's next trick will be to limit this exercise to - say - two hours maximum?

I like your use of the word 'trick'. Perhaps he's trying to decide whether he's Paul Daniel or Winston Churchill. I keep expecting him to parade before the cameras wearing a boiler suit and chomping on a fat cigar.

Derbyshire police have posted a drone video of people with cars visiting the Peak District to walk, with or without dogs. Their statement was that the cars should not be there, as this was 'non-essential travel'. I suppose if you walk all the way - would that be considered 'travelling'?
