I'm assuming the two metre gap thing is to try to ensure one is at a safe distance should the nearby person cough or sneeze, that being one of the main transmission means between people in close proximity. My solution in being force to pass people within the safe 2 metres due to narrow width of path or passage is to hold my breath while passing them. Naive or not, I don't know.

I turned my back to face away when I encountered that problem in town yesterday, but I was heartened by the number of people who did take the trouble to make the required adjustments. It's good that so many seem to have realised that head down on the phone is incompatible with keeping a distance, and nice to see rueful smiles while we do the dance, instead of tops of heads and blank expressions. For a good few folk I imagine it's been some time since they walked with their heads up and saw anything other than pavement and their own feet. Something I found interesting was that there was no way of predicting who would comply and who wouldn't.

As I headed down the road at the end of my exercise walk, my next-door neighbours and those living opposite them were seated on chairs out on the pavement, across the road from each other. I walked down the middle of the road and we all exchanged greetings. I know I have a folding garden chair somewhere but could not find it, so one of the neighbours from over the road produce a stool for me to sit on (leavng it in the middle of the road for me to collect). All offered to muck in and help each other as needed. Same time, same place next week . . .

There's going to be the most almighty row (I hope) afterwards when we get round to discovering why we were so unprepared compared with other countries.

There's already a row but it won't make a difference given that the longstanding plans for dealing with a flu pandemic were deemed 'too expensive' to implement in full, so the country was already at a disadvantage for dealing with a known pandemic risk let alone a novel virus one. Money (it's not even economics since preparedness is important for a country to continue to function economically and/or recover in a timely fashion) is the only consideration these days - who has it and is useful and/or influential to the government.
