You do seem to have been put in an absurd situation, and in a very unfair way Unfortunately, absurd situations are likely to become more frequent in our Alice in Wonderland world. What happens when this stuff goes wrong ought to be a major concern.

Here’s another example of absurdity :

The European Commission wants to develop an app that would contain the digital version of your identity card.

But fear not, our plans are in good shape. Sort of makes you wonder how we coped in the past without all this stuff.

... nor should one have much difficulty in figuring out that this is a subject that attracts conspiracy theorists like almost nothing else. And which a Russian propaganda tool like RT will delight in provoking

Quite! I am somewhat surprised that it has not yet been taken down from Youtube. It's been pretty comprehensively debunked.

So nothing untoward to suspect going on in germ warfare labs then?

I suspect some unauthorised experiment - the lab was internationally known as specialising in corona virus research (even pre Trump had American support) - my suspicion that some experiments (probably unauthorised) in cross-species infection were under way - bats are known as a major habour for corona viruses - the pangolin has not I think been linked to such before but it was apparently the pangolin that provided the key segment of viral code that provided the mechanism for human infection - I suspect this dangerous segment was unknown beforehand.

The whole response both in the initial city denial etc and then that the central government that went out of its way to prevent any outside investigation as well as putting intense pressure on the WHO suggests they had something to hide.

There pretty certainly is work to that end going on around the world. The secrecy of such criminal activity, contrary to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction (London, Moscow and Washington, 10 April 1972,) is what the conspiracy theorists use as a cover for their lack of real scientific evidence in the case SARS-Cov2.

Are the dangers inherent in 'wet markets' too close to the cutting edge of Occam's razor for you? Given the hierarchical nature of the Chinese political and administrative system (something with historical precedent predating the coming to power of the Chinese Communist Party in 1949), it was no surprise that the local administration in Wuhan tried to keep the outbreak under wraps in its early stages. Wet markets are very popular in China. The Chinese Communist Party has much to hide from the rest of the world. For them, handing over to an outside body, any investigation of the source of SARS-Cov2's jump to humans, would be seen as a serious loss of face. Also, bear in mind how quickly SARS-Cov2 was sequenced and was under further investigation in, among other places, the UK, by early January last year. The early actions of the Wuhan authorities were indeed reprehensible. It does not reveal a smoking gun regarding the origins of the virus.

Doesn't Occam's razor suggest that the globe being a huge place and the number of laboratories working on this precise research being very few, there is likely to be a connection between the lab and the appearance of Covid-19 in Wuhan?

That said, Wade (not a specialist) seems to spout a lot of jargon and the Russia Today interviewer actually comes over as more objective .

it does to me - there are hundreds of such wet markets in Chinese cities - totally unfortunate it had to be the one in reasonable proximity to the high grade research lab specialising in corona virus - yes that obviously allowed fast sequencing by the lab after all samples were within easy reach and no doubt the eminent scientists at the lab recognised what they had discovered literally on their doorstep.

Re Chinese Communist party - any party that hides the killing of thousands of peaceful demonstrators etc deserves contempt and no belief whatsoever in any good intentions.

... conspiracy theorists make much of the eight mile distance between Salisbury, site of the novichok poisonings, and the Porton Down research centre.

I might consider it until a better explanation emerged!

A further thought: the analogous coincidence would be that the novichok poison was developed in Russia and the two victims happened to be a Russian double agent and his daughter. For a start …

... and the further 'coincidence' that two Russian agents were just visiting Salisbury 'to admire the cathedral' at exactly the time the novichok was deployed
