BTW thanks for the reminder: I am due for my 6-monthly check-up with my dentist this Wednesday.

      6 monthly check up...

      You were lucky!

Checks ups round here are non-existent, strictly urgent treatments only.

I am half-expecting to be confronted by a notice saying "Sorry, all appointments cancelled till further notice". She did shut down for 3 months last year, without telling her regulars. The notice pinned to the door had fallen to the ground, and I put it back up!

DIY Dentistry is doing well, according to this, in today's Guardian:

There's only one answer to that: "pull the other one".

I had a check-up with my NHS dentist last Monday. I arrive 10 minutes early and was asked to leave and return at the time of the appointment. On that return, I had to wait 20 minutes before I was actually seen. I was given a very cursory examination and advised that the referral to a dental hospital, made a year ago, had been rejected (no reason offered) but would be resubmitted. Why could they not have informed me of the rejection earlier, rather than waiting for my check-up, with its attendant fee?

NHS dentists are being asked to increase their workload to 45% or " normal", increased from 20% of normal that was required post Lockdown 1 for them to receive their full NHS contract payments.

I know that current protocols require more time on cleaning etc, but I'm pretty certain that my private dentist is certainly managing well over 45% of his workload.

( It was him that mentioned the 20 % level).
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

... likewise - walked thro' flurries of snow and had to wait outside for a time as they were short-staffed for vaccinators, but otherwise very friendly and efficient; they will contact me (by text message as they did for this first jab, plus reminder texts) for the second inoculation 'in ten to twelve weeks'. Mme v is younger than I am, and hasn't yet received the call...

Anecdotally - looking around the fifty or so people I saw queuing up, almost no 'black, Asian, or minority ethnic' people : given the demographics of the borough this was concerning.

Just before the five o' clock briefing tonight there was an item about this based on an area of Buckinghamshire which I know well. There really is it seems an aversion to having the vaccine by members of the BAME groups, and this is amplified by very misguided social media communications which it seems some are taking serioiusly.

One change which now emerges from tonight's briefing is that anyone 70 or over can now contact the NHS and ask for an appointment if they've not already been offered once.

If this anti baccine problem is not overcome very quickly, it will be a gift for every bigot to say "told you so" at every opportunity, and undermine all the good work done towards fostering good race relations in this and other countries.

actually if as appears likely both from initial studies + the Israeli findings, that vaccination measurably reduces transmission then the BAME community carrying an indelible badge of skin colour will, if their marked reluctance to be vaccinated continues, be an obvious group to avoid as Covid will be amongst us for many years to come - much the same way that in middle ages lepers had to announce their presence with bell. The leaders of the various communities need urgently to fight the misinformation amongst what appears to be a significant fraction of some communities.

I had my jab last Saturday. I wasn’t too bad until the next day, when I was quite badly fatigued and nauseous. Thankfully, yesterday wasn’t too bad. We had the Oxford Astra-Zeneca vaccine.

Choice BTL nuggets from my local rag today.

You can shout 'conspiracy theorists' all day long, it doesn't change the fact that all of you deep down, know lockdowns are uncalled for and will cause so much damage long term. There is no pandemic, it’s over. Flu deaths have been replaced with covid deaths. No excess deaths It is a shambolic state of affairs, and a shame that humanity could let itself down so badly. All on the word of billionaires and corrupt politicians. And while they lie to you and you believe them you’ll be locked up again and again.
Dont worry, the NHS is coping ok as are most people with the virus, don let the BBC and The Gaurdian scare you too much.
They may be a very small minority but they are repeat offenders, and this scenario is I imagine repeated up and down the country with the inevitable drip drip attrition of reason and common sense, as these views are repeated on many platforms.

Interesting that the internet giants are now beginning to clamp down on this. But I'm pretty sure that in this country, the press are exempt from the impartiality rule - freedom of the press an' all that. The great difference seems to be in broadcasting - I'm constantly amazed that watching clips from, for example, CNN and Fox, neither is impartial - just my side (right) and the other side which is a disgrace. (Much like the press over here, though )
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
