    Indeed. It's the headline on the local rag weekend edition just delivered. So I guess that's the end of the extended season at work, and the hard fought struggle to get volunteer gardeners back on site. It isn't going down well locally as this is one of the fortunate parts of the country as far as infection goes(and very little to do with good management as far as I am concerned despite what the county council keeps claiming) , but given that it's an ultra deep blue area politically I have to assume that 'most' folk are satisfied(as in gov't doing good job) with the way things are heading...

      Major factors seem to be:

      * Shouting or exercising
      * No or poor ventilation
      * Length of exposure time

      While aerosol transmission may be only one form of transmission, in indoor settings it does appear to be significant.
      Mask wearing is not a guarantee that transmission and infection won’t occur, but does reduce the risk.
      Thanks Dave, thats a really interesting read, brilliantly presented.

        Surprised you did not pick up on it when it was mentioned and responded to yesterday afternoon (#4186 & #4187).

          Oh sorry, missed it. I was very busy yesterday. Thanks.

            I didn’t notice either earlier on in the recent thread, though a lot of yesterday was spent catching up after the outage. Yes, it was mentioned earlier, but it sometimes helps to have a summary of the contents.

              Yes, it offers a very salutary warning. I find far too many are getting quite blasé in, for instance, supermarkets.

                I have to say that I don’t notice this myself. I do find that supermarkets are becoming much less careful with trolley hygiene facilities though.

                I would be very interested , with another lockdown imminent, to see any evidence that retail settings are significant in transmission, as I don’t recall having seen any such evidence.

                  Not sure why retail settings should be, or be treated as, any different from any other indoor settings.
                  It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

                    Not saying they should be, but since they are critical for the economy, ( and consequent adverse mental and physical health effects) it certainly needs very good evidence before closing them down again.

                    They are in any case in general being pretty carefully controlled in terms of being “covid secure” right now.

                      The El Pais article previously referenced reports on three extensively researched transmission events - one common factor is close proximity for some extended time with little fresh air or possibly recirculated air that is not filtered properly - in all cases the air was such that the tiny aerosol containing the virus could remain in the air for some considerable time - if I understand correctly another point they make is that contagious surfaces play only a very minor if any role.

                        Does it perhaps depend on the size of the location? The local Tesco is huge, and I assume well ventilated. I still don't go in there too often, and it's generally not too busy - certainly not as busy as it was before. Lidl is smaller but still not too bad, and I usually (now) go there about once a week. Some shops are smaller, and probably not at all well ventilated. The article above indicates the problems.

                        However, some of the scenes shown on TV news recently seem completely disgraceful to me, and it's not perhaps a great surprise that some people are behaving so badly that the virus is now spreading more in England.

                        There may be economic and liberty issues, but of course one doesn't need money and is (perhaps) free to do whatever one likes when one is dead!

                            Press conference at 4.00 PM today.

                            Apparently a scientist says that covid is running out of control.
                            Which it clearly isn't.
                            We can only hope that business is spared the worst lockdown excesses, and that not too much extra collateral damage to physical and mental health is done.

                              I despair. Do you have no grasp of what the "R" (Reproduction) levels indicate? Anything over 1 indicates a significant lack of control. Here are the official estimates around England for yesterday: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-r-number-in-the-uk .

                                Out of control is not necessarily the same as R being over 1.

                                Even simple folk like me can understand that.

                                Oh and the rate of increase is slowing in a number of tier 3 areas.

                                Try not to despair,I'm not.
