There were 402 cases amongst Bristol University students in the 7 days to 21st October. Curiously there were only 117 amongst the students at the UWE.

The two together would probably account for something like 40% to 50% of cases in Bristol over the same period, though that assumes all UWE students are resident in Bristol which is probably not the case.

With over 1000 cases reported in the University of Bristol in the last couple of weeks that is not surprising.

The "heat maps" presented a day or two ago by Professor Van-Tam also show that the bulk of the increase in the South-West Region is in the 16-24 age group.

...my stepson is in the process of completing his engineering PhD at Imperial. As far as I can tell his part of the college is effectively closed, with everyone working from home. He has to get specific approval to nip in to collect particular items of kit. So not a lot of socialising going on...

I think undergrads and Masters students are receiving a mixture of online and in-person teaching, but are told only to visit the College for scheduled teaching. Regardless, I suspect the issue with students everywhere is their socialising off-campus, and at house parties etc. rather than lectures and tutorials on-campus.

There's been a big discrepancy between the two universities in Cambridge. Cambridge had 154 cases in the week to Oct 18th (somewhere around 75% of the total cases for the city in that period) whereas Anglia Ruskin had just 4 (over all three sites). The former has a much more rigorous testing programme, so will have picked up a higher proportion of actual cases, but even so this is a big difference. Anglia Ruskin trains a lot of nurses, so maybe they're even better than general scientists!
