    I caught the education secretary saying that "school is compulsory" on R4 today
    He is WRONG.... education is , school isn't
    Section 7 of the Education Act 1996 applies to England and Wales:

    Compulsory education

    7: Duty of parents to secure education of children of compulsory school age

    The parent of every child of compulsory school age shall cause him to receive efficient full-time education suitable—

    a: to his age, ability and aptitude, and

    b: to any special educational needs he may have,

    either by regular attendance at school or otherwise.
    Hence the name of a well-known organisation
    I am surprised that UK Acts are still not fully gender neutral - though maybe there's a note somewhere in the rule books about how pronouns are used in such.

    By writing 'Dear Sirs', some lawyers feel they are holding out against political correctness. But the battle against gender-neutral language is surely a losing cause, reports Melanie Newman

    I'm still puzzling over the conundrum re the "well-known organisation".

        Let's not forget that this is the man (well, overgrown schoolboy) who thought he could put Russia in its place. Heaven knows how many low-calibre politicians came to occupy offices of state - lack of a pool of genuine talent is presumably one reason. Another might be that some MPs (Alan Johnson, Andy Burnham, for example) concluded that they could achieve more outside Parliament.

          Interpretation Act 1978 Section 6:

          " Gender and number.

          In any Act, unless the contrary intention appears,—

          (a)words importing the masculine gender include the feminine;

          (b)words importing the feminine gender include the masculine;

          (c)words in the singular include the plural and words in the plural include the singular."

            Lack of genuine talent is one possibility but don't forget that many of the most experienced and some of the most able Tory politicians were forced out of parliament by Johnson and the Brexit ideologues who are now in charge.

            Additionally BJ specifically chose people for the cabinet who swore fealty to him and the Brexit cause. Talent and ability didn't come into it. In fact those would have been a hindrance.

                ... which Cummings's oddballs and misfits wouldn't have been.

                    Williamson is competing with Gove in an attempt to become the worst ever education secretary. He isn't a natural bully, but perhaps having been Cameron's Chief Whip for a while, he's learnt at thing or two.

                        The new Global Britain.

                        Oh, by the way, not only did we pursue the wrong type of Covid-19 app but it seems we are now investing in a company that has the wrong sort of satellites.

                        The spirit of Chris Grayling lives on even though he is no longer part of the cabinet.

                          The government press briefings used to show a bar chart of the daily reported deaths in the UK with a line representing the rolling 7 day average.

                          I've been doing the same type of chart and for the last 7 days the rolling average has been more or less flat:

                          Code:
                          23/06/2020	122
                          24/06/2020	118
                          25/06/2020	119
                          26/06/2020	121
                          27/06/2020	117
                          28/06/2020	116
                          29/06/2020	117

                            Thanks for locating the "rule". Presumably there are specific words to clarify if gender specific rules are to apply, or indeed if non-binary gender situations are to be encoded.
