The London Book Fair is next week. Several significant US publishers have pulled their international rights teams, but I don't think any UK publishers ( or other attendees) have yet withdrawn. The Bologna Childrens Book Fair was cancelled, and I suspect there is huge pressure on the organisers of the UK event.

Midst the pit heaps, as you may have heard, our footballers have stopped shaking hands .... not really much of a sacrifice as you do it when a goal is scored ..... daughter 3 has gone into work to be told they mustn’t shake hands but can touch elbows .....

We still shook hands at Quaker meeting in York yesterday!
I don't know what happened at 'The peace' at eucharist in the minster, though!

I think we know the answer to the last question ....

To rfg - I really hope it works out OK for you, and you neither get the disease, nor have any major problems in your family from it. I do wonder one thing - which is that deaths might seem to be related to pneumonia in the final stages of the disease - and seem to be worse for older people. I recently had a vaccination against pneumonia - and I'm in the older age group which is more at risk. Is there any evidence that the pneumonia jab would at least reduce the chances of dying from coronavirus - though not necessarily of catching it?

Dave, for what it is worth, I am currently recovering from an attack of shingles, which was not as severe as I had been led to believe. I had had the shingles vaccination, and my GP thought that this was probably the reason why I had got off relatively lightly.

As far as coronavirus is concerned, I hope my previous pneumonia jag will perform the same service if I succumb. I would be in the firing line on grounds of age, heart, and lungs.

I'm working on the assumption that the virus will spread in the UK. Consequently (as an older person) I shall avoid public transport as far as I can, avoid travel to London, cinema trips etc; plenty of hand washing.

I timed 'Ring-a-ring-a-roses' to wash my hands to, but I found verse one lasts only ten seconds....

Homeopathic audio remedies can also work so a millisecond of audio from any composer whose name begins with the letter "V" is effective (it's a VIRUS so only V will work) against most of the symptoms

I read it on the internet so it must be true
So violins, violas, vibraphones and valve trombones are all good.

Maybe there's going to be a market for new versions of major works by Bach, Brahms, Beetthoven, Mozart and others with reduced or different orchestration. Bach cantatas being Vocal music are probably OK, as long as the backing tracks are with the restricted instrument set.

Apple is now rushing out a new version of its Logic Pro X DAW with a new virus friendly set of Virtual instruments. Virtual instruments are, of course good.
Reaper and other DAWs are expected to follow suit.

Music by Verdi , Veracini, Viotti and Vivaldi is being specially recommended during these troubled times.

Thanks. I am being encouraged to try (have) the shingles jab. What's the likelihood of getting shingles anyway - somebody with medical knowledge might know. I know that it can be very unpleasant, but the chances of getting it might be very low anyway. I just don't have eough information about that.

I believe that if shingles is detected very early on that anti-virals also work. However, they only work right at the onset. mrs d. had a dose of those when a pharmacist detected incipient shingles - which was later confirmed by a blood test - and the drugs seemed to minimise major problems.

I’ve had shingles and it is well worth taking every measure to avoid contracting it

There’s very little evidence for much of anything. The vaccine that you just had is for the bacteria Streptococcus Pneumoniae. The
CV causes Pneumonia by directly attacking Lung Tissue, not by causing a secondary bacterial infection. I am presuming that you understand the basic distinction between a virus and a bacteria. Since it is possible that an individual weakened by CV can then be more susceptible to a subsequent attack by Strep Pneumonia, getting the vaccine for the latter has some value. I have actually already had it a few years ago, when I was diagnosed with a mild form of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

Eyam is perhaps well known for imposing quarantine rules during a plague outbreak towards the end of the 17th Century - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyam

Whether it was effective is difficult to say - as a significant number of the villagers died, but perhaps the disease did not spread wider afield.

I would like to know, if anyone can find the details, how or why the SARs outbreaks earlier this century were contained. Were vaccines developed, or did the dieseas just die out, or did people develop natural immunity? I can find no mention of vaccines in connection with SARs - perhaps I haven't looked hard enough.

                          There is a graph on this page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Severe...atory_syndrome - for 3003.

I understand that the current virus, which seems to be a form of RNA virus, has been sequenced, and that animal trials of vaccines may be about to take place.

The Mexican Corona Beer Company, whose product is quite prevalent here, is releasing a new bevy called Corona Premium. The first advertisement for it ran on American Television today with the tag line “Corona Premium is coming to our shores today “

Boarders of a certain age may remember the fizzy drink Corona, which came in returnable bottles with a flip-ceramic-stopper. I wonder if I drank enough in my early years to have achieved some kind of immunisation.....
