That's what I had thought but two of the advisors, I apologise for not having the names to hand but van Tam ( ? ) and one of the ladies, were pretty clear in their ( albeit coded ) disapproval of Cummings' actions and they haven't been seen since. And today there were no experts at all, just jack of all trades Raab.

I wish the person who asked Raab a question about that, and he responded that she hadn't asked a medical question, had had one up her sleeve, to counter his response that "he'd answered all the questions - but not medical ones"! Perhaps if Raab re-appears by himelf again all the media questioners can have medical questions ready to fire at him.

Was this the "Colonel Kurtz foreign secretary. The full-on madman with vein throbbing in his forehead" or had the nurses persuaded him to take his mogadon?

Apparently the daily briefings may become weekly (Source: 'Today', Radio 4 this morning)

Too much like hard work. Pathetic.

In other news, I popped into Salisbury this morning for a few things, and to check out how the various books stores were doing.
Town was fairly quiet, especially as Tuesday is usually the busiest weekday with it being market day.Plenty of people out and about though.
Waterstones seemed decently busy, everybody eager to keep distance, and staff all visored up. It felt like a very safe environment at that level of footfall. There was a short queue most of the time at the tills. They told me they had had a very good day yesterday.
I was amazed at how many stores of all kinds were still closed, probably around 25% . Actually not a bad shopping environment, driving and parking nice and easy, and shops very welcoming. The maze of floor signs for the various shops in the shopping mall might confuse a person though.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

It sounds from today's briefing that BJ has reverted back to bumbling idiot mode - I wonder what the next U-turn will be.

Another excellent "More or Less" programme from Radio 4 this morning. And they will be doing an extra 2 programmes at the request of the network controller.

I say do a lot more programmmes - bi-weekly? Then I would be a lot more informed than via the Downing Street daily exercise - reportedly to go down to weekly (which I suppose would limit the exposure of their evasions and fantasy world thinking).

                        Agree about More or Less.

On the subject of R4 programmes, I was listening to a podcast of an old In Our Time episode on the subject of Parasitism. In passing, diseases were mentioned by the excellent Steve Jones. He said that many of the world diseases such as Smallpox can now be traced (using clever generic markers) to a jump from animal sources to a single human who lived thousands of years ago. It was from this single individual that a particular disease spread worldwide. Lessons for today?

I’m not sure if this article has been mentioned here, or in this thread - https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...b-global-en-GB

I’m not so bothered about Gaia, which I feel is a bit like homeopathy, though Lovelock is undoubtedly very good at some things. That doesn’t make him right about everything.

Bruno Latour does seem to be making some valid points though.

One concern about coronavirus and jobs and “the economy”’ is the disproportionate “damage” which happens to some people. I read today that the Scottish economy shrank by about 2% over the last few months. Even spread out over a year or two, that wouldn’t have a big impact on many better off people - and that will include me, though we’re not super rich by any means. So presumably the pain which is no doubt being felt in some quarters is due to our more than slightly broken “system” and the way it is being (mis)managed by those charged [(mis)trusted] with doing that.

The “economy” like the virus, is not an entity to be treated as a rational and active object, to be worshipped, maintained or feared or “controlled”, depending on which misuse of semantics one wishes to indulge in.

The app's going well I see

Lord Bethell says the coronavirus-tracing app is "not a priority" and has no firm launch date.
