    France heading for a lockdown.

And, of course they have their own unique take on what is an “ essential business”

“Mr Philippe said the closure did not apply to essential businesses which he listed as food shops, chemists, banks, tobacco shops and petrol stations.”

Probably be lottery outlets as the outlier in our list when we get round to lockdown........
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

As in Italy, 'tobacco shops' probably really means (or at least includes) newspaper stalls/kiosks etc, which serve useful other purposes such as selling bus/metro tickets.

A ‘tabac’ is more than a mere purveyor of fags, rolling tobacco etc. Newspapers, magazines, stamps, lottery tickets, stationery etc etc - a very important part of life in France. Think - God strike me down for the comparison - a branch of WH Smith but rather more useful.

Should such a move be imminent, I might need to get a few things in, tomorrow. I've ordered a front door intercom kit, due for delivery on Monday. That way I can get deliverers to leave stuff outside, for me to pick up once they have gone. Inconvenient but one must do one's bit. I see various Sunday papers have picked up on the story.

Mmmm. Is an intercom really necessary? You could simply put notices on the door. However an intercom might make things slightly easier - something to think about. I suppose it also depends where you live. Some people could just lean out of the window and talk - from a distance.

The one I have ordered cost only a little over £50 including p&p and includes one-way video (170mm screen) + two-way audio. There is a plane glass 'window' in the front door, so two-way visual interaction is still possible.

Well if indeed the government are considering quarantining the over 70s it would be a direct consequence of their "herd immunity" policy.

As we know, at an infection rate of 2.5 people per one infected individual it would need circa 60% to contract and survive the disease for herd immunity to come into effect. This would be around 40 million people and with a death rate of 1% it would result in 400,000 deaths. This is, of course, a disastrous situation and a large proportion of those deaths would be over 70.

Not sure how BS/DC would implement such a policy though - perhaps round up the oldies and put us all in concentration camps with watch towers and armed guards.

You don't get les mecs sitting on bar-stools sipping Ricard all hours of the day in WH Smith....at least I've never seen them.

One report I read said that the lockdown will even include those with pre-existing medical conditions. I sincerely hope not. "Terribly sorry but you can't continue with your chemo". "Terribly sorry but no more dialysis"

And how is that going to work for, say, an elderly couple living out in the sticks where the likes of Uber, Sainsbury's and Deliveroo etc don't deliver to ?

And the quality of the meals that Deliveroo will provide ? My wife is severely coeliac. If we relied on "meals on wheels" she would die. Who pays for these meals ?

And what happens if you do catch Covid-19 and get complications ? "Hello,111, I'm having breathing difficulties." "How old are you ?" "71"...click....dial-tone.

So, sorry , Boris but Up Yours.
