You're not wrong! Sadly, we look like ending up with more than 20,000 dead, which will presumably not be 'a good result'.

During the last few weeks Raab has transformed from a repressed Colonel Kurtz to tax accountant on modogon.

Not really. Look at what's happening now in Singapore ...

Singapore has moved to extend restrictions to combat coronavirus until early June, as the number of cases in the city state exceeded 9,000 due to a growing number of infections in its crowded migrant worker dormitories.

While Singapore had drawn worldwide attention for what was seen as its success in containing the early stages of the outbreak, a new and quickly expanding second peak of infections has underlined how easily the virus is able to return.

The tiny city-state has the highest number of cases in south-east Asia, a huge increase from 200 infections on 15 March, when its outbreak appeared to be nearly under control. About 3,000 cases have been reported in the past three days.

Don't you mean mogadon? I don't think he's doing too badly - but I could be wrong. I know it's not too fashionable to want to give politicians the benefit of a lot of doubts, but I think that mostly they're muddling along quite well under the circumstances. Of course, if they'd prepared beforehand they might have done quite a bit better, but we won't be able to check that out for quite some time, and we are where we are .....

I can't understand the reticence in not making the general public wear face masks when out and about. Do they not work ? Is it because supply is finite and will 'starve' the NHS of them ? That it will give people a false sense of security and so they will forget all the other social-distancing/hand-washing measures ? Or that making wearing them mandatory will tip the populus into saying "Blow this for a laugh, I've had enough and I'll take my chances' and throwing social-distancing and lockdown out of the window ?

Don't forget, were awl innit togevver like.
A spokesman for GPs, interviewed on 'Today' earlier this morning, was of the view that there's no need for members of the general public to wear a mask if they're fit and well and follow the government's instructions. (I imagine it would also make life even more difficult for sub-titlers!)

Certainly make it more difficult for the hard of hearing.

Does that mean to do as they say or do as they do?

A good article (imo, of course!) on what constitutes a political decision:

Certainly is The sad thing is that it just highlights the inadequacies of all politicians as I am certain that were the other lot in power then they'd also be making monumental cock-ups. It's the nature of politicians.

I'm always reminded about the science-fiction story that had a massive asteroid on a collision course that would destroy earth but that a habitable planet had been discovered and that there was enough time to build two huge arks to rescue humanity on a one-way trip. The first ark was filled with all the really important people like politicians, estate agents, snake-oil salesmen and sales women etc. and sent on its way. It arrived safely but the occupants on the new planet were sad that the second ark with all its occupants must have perished on their journey as they never arrived.

                              .
                              Supposition, I’m afraid,
In any case, right now, i think I would take the South Korean or ( or possibly Swedish) leadership over our own.

As life begins to return to something like normality in Seoul and beyond, other countries are asking what lessons can be learned

                                Indeed
Along the lines of the whole "President Blair" argument that comes out when anyone suggests that maybe we should have a different type of head of state.
