Just relax, everyone! Care homes and hospitals can be staffed by fishermen who've had to sell their boats. Patients will be discharged once they sign a form promising to pick crops. This, together with the raising of the retirement age to 80 and the fact that lots of people won't be able to afford to stop working because everything will cost more, should help PP to keep immigration down. However, just in case this masterplan doesn't work ..... don't get old and don't get sick.

Shame it was mostly older people that voted for this lot, isn't it ?

I don't see ANY solidarity between generations.Or very little at any rate. The young and those not yet of pensionable age have already been left to find their own salvation.

Dairy farmers have been struggling for some years. Further stresses such as lack of staff may be the tipping point I fear to the rise of the milk factory type establishment seen elsewhere, with all its attendant animal welfare and environmental issues.

A colleague of mine whose opinions I have always respected, and will continue to respect,* was begged by her children to vote 'Remain', for their sakes if not her own, but she voted 'Leave'.
It could be argued that other groups which - unwittingly or not - may have voted against their own best interests were farmers and fisherfolk.
            * Mind you, she claims to have enjoyed the most recent episode of 'Endeavour'....

I feel ashamed to be from my generation, to be honest, and find it difficult to believe we grew up to see the country reconstructed post WW2 with the help of immigrant labour, and the benefits of so-called "progressive" eduation. I hope I don't end up having to share space with a selection of them in a care home.

So[sic], those hoping to come to the UK will have to show proficiency in English. Hang on, what about those intending to work in parts of Wales where Welsh is the first language? Is this the ugly return of the Welsh knot? Likewise Scottish or Scots Gaelic in parts of Scotland.

Now we are informed that Patel wants rid of Philip Rutnam. Surely it's the oily rag, not the engineer we need shot of.

One or two commentators have read between the Patel rhetoric on quotas and believe that the hard-line stuff will be ameliorated where genuine labour shortages exist, in fact she said so herself.
Time will tell, but as someone who actually used the work permit system of the 60's and 70's - partly reliant on proven inability to fill jobs with UK workers (it worked fine) - to bring unskilled Italians, Serbo-Croats and Bengalis to this country to fill jobs that British workers would not come near despite recruitment drives in the unemployment black-spots of England, I have a suspicion that many, perhaps most of the hard-to-fill lower-paid jobs will continue to be filled by 'exceptional case' immigrants.
                      But who really knows.

On the other hand, they could of course try getting it right first time by taking intelligent advice before proceeding, or not.

The government wants to be seen to be 'getting on with the job' - hence the barrage of announcements, policies, targets and what have you. I suspect that the changes that will become necessary as reality kicks in will be announced last thing on Friday afternoons and described as 'refinements'.

Steady now, that’d be far too sensible and understandable and wouldn’t upset all those not in tune with the right leaning media!

They could but politicians promise what they believe will get them elected. Pity the poor devils in the Home Office trying to make coherent policy out of Ms Patel's statements.
