This week the novelist received the Olof Palme prize for achievement in the spirit of the assassinated Swedish statesman. He reflects on how a lack of leadership today has allowed us to ‘sleepwalk’ into Brexit

Simply the greatest author of the 20th century I.M.H.O. If I'm ever asked for my Desert Island Discs, my book would be "The Karla Trilogy", which combines "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy", "The Honourable Schoolboy" and "Smiley's People". He is one of the few spy book writers to have successfully dealt with the post Cold War situation.
