    Green Thatcher

Notwithstanding her metaphorical cohones, Ive always detested Margaret Thatcher with a passion. I've always felt the nation's mores changed drastically for the worse because of her. However, I had forgotten that she was something of a seer in the sense of Global Warming. It is something of a revelation to listen to this short episode of Green Originals.

Reflections on modern pioneers of the environmental movement. Today - Margaret Thatcher.

Saw the heading and thought it might be about some new roofing technique.

The key point could be that Margaret Thatcher was a Scientist. She didn't regard Economics as a "proper Science" I seem to recall.

She didn't do much to stop road building (Eg Twyford Down), promote public transport or sustainable living AFAIR. However, my memory could be at fault.

She appeared to be against the mining of coal, in this country at least

I think that viewpoint was influenced strongly by that of Keith Joseph who was, IIRC, more voluble on the subject.

It sticks in my throat to defend Maggie's reputation, but the programme did mention that most of her ministers were bemused (and in disagreement) about her 'green' ideas.

But poor shrinking violet that she was, she refrained from forcing her views on them!

I think she may have had a different idea of green politicians than is meant in the Thread title, as this fly-on-the-wall documentary revealed:

How Do You Like Your Steak Sir. I Like It Raw. What About The Vegetables. They Will Just Have The Same. Very funny spitting image scene. So Funny lol.

Previously I was unaware that Mrs T is regarded as a green pioneer for her forthright speeches on the subject. I don't remember the speeches but they certainly hit hard.

She certainly expressed some views which appeared 'green', but, of course, believed that the Market would sort it. Not sure she had quite thought that one through.

I think she also claimed credit for discovering a hole in the ozone layer.

Very much basing her ideas on that self-contradicting notion that everyone should available themselves of the wonderful opportunities offered by our society to get to the top. There can't be a top without a bottom - by simple definition.

We've now found several in her opinions!
