    As others see us..Neil MacGregor

Had anyone heard this series on Radio 4 this week? Some episodes have (in my opinion) been better than others, eg the USA one seemed heavily tilted towards pop-culture. However the final one from Poland was absolutely terrific. It shed a new light on the Polish people and their troubled recent history. And if one wants an insight into how the EU...not to mention Brexit....is seen by others, do listen to at least the last 10 minutes.

Neil MacGregor takes five journeys overseas to hear what others think of modern Britain.

DO listen - it is sobering, unfussy, and unshowy, but quietly chilling.

Why are the British, uniquely in the world, so obsessed with how they are perceived by other countries?

Yes, once one of the very biggest and now very much not. Buses zipping by standing room only full, and all full of other commuters?

....Too much unfilled leisure time and cardboard caricatures that tell /show us to be 'unique'....I blame the Royal family and ignorant Engerland football hooligans - {in brief]........

Nobody alive today remembers a time when Britain had a significant empire.

There have been other imperial powers - Spain, Turkey - but they don’t seem to suffer from the same ‘perception obsession’ as the British.

Does it have to be an 'obsession'? It's quite interesting to know what other people think about us as individuals, so why not as a nation? Or how any group, 'they', sees our group, 'us'. It's a field of knowledge which might cause us to reflect, mutual understanding.

indeed....and don't we have very very many [a few in the scheme of things] subsidised academics and curators and achivists and societies poking around in dust and flakey books and documents and artefacts [and scorees] to do just that ....while Rome [ok an insurance job on a Bradford Mill] burns....

                        ....weird....

Do we know it is "unique"? Useful to hear from Forunistas in France, the US or any other countries if there are any "Do They Mean Us?"-type programmes/documentaries that feature in broadcasts there.
