    I think problems have arisen where something that didn't start as an overtly political thread gets taken over and becomes rancorous. For those who were engaged in discussion it can be frustrating to get caught in the cross fire or to have to abandon posting. Such incidents will bother some more than others.

      'Political' threads frequently seem to become increasingly dominated by what I would call ad hominem criticisms, at which stage I simply stop reading them. As oddoneout says, participation is not mandatory. Sooner or later the thread in question will come to an end when those still participating become exhausted or a moderator pulls the plug!
