Patton was indeed a snarling arrogant nasty piece of work who was brilliantly portrayed by George C Scott in the Oscar-winning movie of that name.
Chris Patten, on the other hand …..

I remember John Patten MP as being more snarly. Didn't he get sued for libel? Neither to be confused with Jazz/Soul organist "Big" John Patton who contributed much more to humanity.

Yes. The Trumpster is one of the least likely fan of Lady Day I can think of.

Let's hope someone Googling the subject will be directed to Nina Simone or Billie Holiday

The head of Birmingham's education department took exception - understandably - to some pretty nasty comments made by Mr Patten, who came off second best in the subsequent court case. The damages awarded were paid to educational charities.

I think some confusion has arisen over CHRIS Patten, who was Environement Secretary in the final Thatcher government and Party Chairman during John Major’s first administration. He was pretty nasty but effective in that role and managed to win the ‘92 show for his boss, while losing his own seat in Bath.

Major rewarded him by making him the final governor of Hong Kong.

In recent years, he’s talked a lot of sense re: Brexit, so I suppose he deserves a pass. Chris Patten will be an interviewee on Reputations.

JOHN Patten was Education Secretary in John Major’s ill-starred ‘Back to Basics’ admin and he was the one who got sued (and lost). He’d previously been a Geography academic. Nowadays, I think he’s retired from politics.

Alas, perhaps these sentences tell us why that, even with the most hateful Tory government in recent times, Labour stands no chance of becoming the party of government: the water has been poisoned by the hard left infiltration of our party. Alan Johnson and Peter Hain are honourable men whose background in fighting for equality and fairness is clear. Had these men, and the majority of the Parliamentary Labour Party, not been crushed by the influx of militant members we would have had a Labour government by now and the nightmare of Boris and BREXIT would not be upon us. The poor, the homeless, the children in schools, the asylum seekers are paying the price for those who champion ideology over reality. When Mr Corbyn is gone, and it will be soon, but not until he has done maximum damage by giving Mr Johnson another election victory for the Tories, there will be people sleeping on pavements who would have had homes had it not been for his forcing his arrogant. outdated and unworkable ideology on the body politic. 'Oh, leave them to it!' says Mr Kemp in the corner when I read him this post, but I can't because I care for those who suffer in this society. The Tories are getting away with murder and those who could easily stop them are being prevented from doing so by those who have assumed the mantle of Labour in order to shout and swear or write long polemics. It doesn't have to be this way. The majority of Labour MPs and the caring public would be so pleased to be rid of Corbyn and his gang so that they could get on with the business of restoring justice, fairness and truth.

No idea who eighth is referring to....this description doesn't fit either Patten, as far as I can remember.

                  Still no idea.

The Chris Patten I remember was/is a thoroughly decent, honourable, civilized and personally likeable politician and man (I met him, as I did several politicians who did time in N Ireland, in the 1980s). I really think, whoever is being referred to, the forum is a better place without this sort of unsavoury and unsubstantiated invective. Chris Patten, for all he was a party politician, has a fine record as a distinguished public servant.

Ah yes, the latter of whom honourably failed to declare contributions to his failed campaign for Deputy Leadership and was constrained to resign his post as Secretary of State for Wales in consequence.

Ah, so it’s ok to be a “wet” tory like Patten but not a “Marxist “ like Corbyn.

With the liberal media enabling the kicking that Corbyn gets every day in the right wing press , it’s a miracle he isn’t even more unpopular. And of course, the next Labour leader , whoever, will get the same kicking.

Swinson will be the next cheerful face of un threatening “ liberalism” that they turn to. Lots of nice words, and nothing to upset the upper middle class apple cart.
