Sticking with NGOs and acronyms, the UK is unique in its enthusiasm for non-governmental conservation bodies. The idea of a conservation NGO with membership running into millions is often greeted with incredulity in other European countries, as I've discovered on conferences and seminars abroad (I couldn't find figures for the current memberships of the Audubon Society or Sierra Club in the US - richardfg might be able to find them?). The RSPB's membership is 2½ times that of the nearest sized political party (which is bigger than the rest put together), the National Trust's 10½ times. Likewise inconceivable elsewhere is the idea of a conservation NGO owning one seventh of the nation's coastline (not including Scotland). This is not to say that other countries don't have extremely effective government-led conservation, or better wilderness areas, they do - Croatia and Slovenia being my favourite European countries in this respect .
