    UK "culture"

Somewhere else there is a "discussion" that included some things about people who are percieved to dislike or denigrate the "culture" of the UK. I was wondering what people thought was "our" culture in the first place?
I often perceive a real insecurity in some statements I read about the culture of the UK as if it somehow is "threatened". When I work in Ireland or mainland Europe I don't get the same thing. Is this because people are more secure in their culture and its interactions with the rest of the world?
When I worked in Shetland I did projects with groups of teenagers in schools and outwith (as they say in Scotland). Like many "remote" (though the Shetlanders would say they are in the middle rather than on the edge!) small communities there is a real passion amongst the young for making heavy metal. When asking about what music people were engaged in, a typical answer was along the lines of "I'm in a death metal band called Decaying Sheep Corpse, and I play the fiddle". No conflict whatsoever.

So it would be interesting (and useful to have more examples to use with students and the like) to know what you folks think IS the "culture" of the UK.

    for starters my list includes

    Byrd
    Bhangra
    The Scratch Orchestra
    Unintentionally micriotonal local bands
    Choral singing
    and so on

As the non U.K. participant here...when I have read the term “Culture “ being used here I have thought that it wasn’t being used a term restricted to Artistic Preferances but more in the sense of Liberalism. For example, while certain non Western ‘Cultures ‘ may think that stoning a women to death for committing Adultery is a a just punishment and a great form of entertainment, the ‘Culture ‘ of the U.K. might not concur with this, and the limits should be placed on the concept of ‘Cultural Relativism.’

Possibly why "culture" was given a lower case initial and put in inverted commas? I'd've stuck an "s" on the end, myself - so many aspects of UK arts life that really make me feel glad to be alive - to MrGG's list () I'd add

The Huddersfield Festival of Contemporary Music
        Dunstable
        Shakespeare
        Opera North
        Doctor Who
        Beer
        Single Malt Whiskies
        The Dream of Gerontius
People who hate The Dream of Gerontius
Horrific murders in lovely landscapes solved by nicely-spoken people on telly
        Billy Connolly
        Chaucer
        Terry Pratchett
        ....

ach! Too many - I'd be here all day.

Oh, yes - "thinking that spending all day making lists is a great way to spend time!"

Any “ culture”, or just the parts we like /approve of/enjoy?

Should I mention brass and silver bands? Or leave it to bbm2?

I will chip in with military bands though.

Cricket, particularly matches carefully choreographed to ensure that passers-by do not see a ball bowled.
