Right, back to the workshop and cutting dovetails. Lalalalalalalalalalalalal …
But no-one was saying that Muslims are clones of each-other . There will be similarities, there are quite a few of them in the world. Roger's not a hero for me, I just like his books and many of his ideas.

Scruton's book on the Ring is pretty much unreadable, I'd say, regardless of your politics.

Let it never be forgotten he was the man who claimed that people had 'a right to be stupid', a right that he has exercised repeatedly over the years, as well as encouraging others to follow his miserable example.

I can't help thinking that a truly healthy society would give no exposure to people like Scruton - and, indeed, when the world seemed to be on the mend (in the last years of the 20th century), he disappeared because he was irrelevant.

I've no doubt he'll disappear again soon; hopefully, permanently this time.

Sorry to head so far off topic but your second paragraph/sentence brings to mind the Stalin saw "Complete identity of views can only exist in the graveyard". He then, of course, went on to do his best to achieve such "identity of views".

Poles apart in his philosophising from me (and I guess from many on this Forum), but in the spirit of respecting others' points of view, RIP Roger.

I have my doubts that he will see this.

Personally, I had no respect whatever for his points of view, but de mortuis nil nisi bonum, so

Is it just me or do others find all these RIP threads and emoticons all a bit too much playing to the gallery?

As someone once said, let's praise the living a little more while they're alive and leave the dead to themselves (or words to that effect!).

Probably not "just" you SirV - but others who share your view may prefer just to ignore the Threads rather than post on them. (Not many emoticons on this particular Thread, which wasn't initiated as an "RIP" one, of course.

But it's good to remember and reflect. I'm sorry that Mr Scruton's death did not become an RIP thread. He was a fine thinker but couldn't resist making silly comments. I value his books on philosophy and music and they did much to enrich my life.

I'm glad it isn't an RIP thread. Not that I ever use that formulation myself. I don't see any purpose at all in celebrating someone who stood so proudly and stultifyingly against all the most vital innovations in artistic, philosophical and political thinking that took place in his lifetime, quite aside from his giving legitimacy to racist and xenophobic views.
