    John Berger @ 90

Fascinating documentary film on BBC4 last night(6 November) to celebrate John Berger's 90th birthday and his extraordinary creative life.
Enjoyed seeing John riding his powerful motorbike!
Such a humane and intellectual man. Pity there aren't more like him in these days of Trump & Brexit.

Documentary exploring the life and work of the late writer and art critic John Berger.

It was a terrific film, wasn't it! Such LIFE in the man - an enviable combination of sharp intellect and physical vitality. (And so touching to hear the ex-neighbour begging him on film to come back for a visit ... "even if only for a day" ... nearly in tears at the absence of his friend.) I totally second your recommendation, Jazzr.

My eyes skated over this item when skimming through RT and marking up; so a huge thanks for bring this programme to my attention JR: I've long been a fan of JB since seeing his "Ways of Seeing" back in the day, a huge part of my personal radicalisation package! I'm still not sure I understand his theory about the sphericity of time, however...

I do hope his plea was answered. It was almost pathetic to hear him speak his name to camera: "Louis". And this despite Berger's assessment that the villagers didn't count his writing as proper work.

This wonderful programme, as was to a lesser extent the earlier one on BBC4 with D.O. Norris introducing clips of BBC film of great pianists, made the licence fee seem an even greater bargain than Lidl single malt whisky.

An interview with John Berger from The Observer Review(30/10/16):

On the eve of his 90th birthday, one of the most influential writers of his generation talks about migration, Brexit, growing old – and his fondness for texting

Indeed, the world is a poorer place now - wonderful thinker, and lovely human being (and I hope Louis got to see his friend before he died).

              R I P - and many thanks

With "Ways of Seeing" he made Benjamin understandable for the likes of me, while at the same time bringing his ideas up to date as pertinent for the new consumer age by then well underway.

Who and where are the likes of his successors to guide all our future?

                  Another of my heroes gone.

The fell-sergeant has struck a wounding blow to start the year. John Berger illuminated my world in the 70s, with Ways of Seeing, and I can't recall a similar impact since reading Richard Hoggart's, Uses of Literacy in the 1950s; life-changing magnificent obsession moments. RIP

Recently sorted through my old VHS tapes and discovered this 'Face To Face' with John Berger:

John Berger (Author), BBC News (TV Program), Face To Face (TV Program)

Also, 'About Time'. Can't imagine this on this Channel 4 today!

A visual essay on time by John Berger, broadcast in the early days of Channel 4 in 1985 (when C4 did such things). Simple format - Berger in check shirt in ...

I have to say find myself fretting more and more on behalf of the world as the Bergers of this world depart and people forget, or are made to.

Sunday 23 July 8.30 - John Berger: Ways of Listening 1926-2017

                              Radio Times says:

Sarah Dillon presents a celebration of the work of novelist and critic, TV presenter and philosopher John Berger. In the company of actor Simon McBurney, biographer Tom Overton, curator Gareth Evans plus writer and friend Jay Griffiths, Dillon discusses Berger's career, celebrating and explaining his ideas while also remembering the man. As well as various Berger interviews, there are archive recordings of his radio and television output, including his seminal series Ways of Seeing, editions of Between the Ears and a dramatisation of his novel To the Wedding.
                              Producer Tim Dee.

I feel there is lots that Berger can teach our world of today - for me, he is much missed.
