From what I remember from my early childhood, being expected to act out any burgeoning performing talents for the benefit of relatives and visitors was one of the more pleasurable aspects of my upbringing. One could actually make people laugh! I would be made to sing "I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch", and everyone would go "Aaaah!" and say things like "Bravo!" and "What a talented little boy! Can you make him do other things?" And, as can be seen, it did me no harm at all!

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
