If this were April 1 I'd be tempted to think it was another in the line of Panorama's Spaghetti harvest spoofs. But nothing surprises me in this crazy century.

This sort of thing is one of the pluses in LGBT+ . It's called "Furry Sex" I know someone who's into it.

In his musical play Die Rundkoepfer und die Spitzkoepfer (1937, brilliant music supplied by Eisler) Brecht urged the German peasantry off their knees to combat fascism - but in their case he was recommending action over prayer, or, as in this case, knee patches!

(Why can't I get my computer to do umlauts etc any more?)

Windöws mächine? Mac still gets an ümläüt with alt+u, then the letter yöü wänt the ümläüt ön.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

            .
... my cheapo chromebook is hopeless with accents - when I find the need I search (google &c) a word avec the accent I want, and then copy & paste à volonté
            .

On a Mac, I recently discovered, keep the a, e, i, o or u key pressed and a menu of accents appears.

... would the vinteuil method not work?

Yes, very ingenious V but a bit slow...... but there must be a way of doing it easily on a tablet - I wonder what Czechs do?

                      Write a cheque!

Oddly enough the usual system I used worked for an é earlier today, so it must all be down to sometimes it does, sometimes not. This is the one I use:

This page is part of Ted's HTML Tutorial. This is a list of most of the special ALT characters you can create with your keyboard.

                        But never bounce a Czech!

I've just had a look at a couple of sites, they say one can select a special language keyboard for Czech where the number keys are replaced by the most-used accented letters - to select a number one has to use 'Shift'.

I don't know how to do it on my Android phone. I can see that you have to hold down the letter required for umlaut but can't figure out how to get it to actually appear in a post.

Press the required letter and hold then, when the little menu appears with the accented letters, slide your finger over the chosen one and release......it took me ages to work this out too!
