And then one might query how 'tolerance' might apply. Allowing others, doing no harm to others, but not necessarily adopting oneself, in one's own life? Tolerating what where?

Part of that problem is that music must be, of all the arts, the most invasive: it can invade other people's lives whether they want it to or not. Should it just be 'tolerated'. Should one 'tolerate' people disliking as well as liking?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

The answer has to be a resounding "No", if this includes imposing music in public places.

Does that include brass bands in parks?
          Buskers outside Bath Abbey?
          Singing at football matches?

(Don't get me wrong, I'm mostly annoyed by music in public places but sometimes delighted by it...... )

Yes to that one. Certainly. And certainly if amplified. Brass bands in bandstands? No, I'd say not, because they are likely to be prearranged, properly organised concerts (though they may be equally annoying to some, I suppose). Singing at football matches? No, because that's what you're supposed to do at football matches. So I gather. :-)

There was the case of the student who by moving into a flat next door, then complaining about the noise, nearly got the long-established jazz at the Bull in Barnes closed down - the issue only being resolved when she agreed to move away!

I guess it has to be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Depends on the frequency and duration.

The unamplified singing is OK (apart from the one about the referee to the tune of Clementine) but not the loud music played before and after the match. Or the noisy music played between overs or whenever someone scores a 4 or a 6 in a T20 cricket match.

Is it high or low frequencies you object to the most?

                    Only high-pitched roofs may apply...

I believe it to be the case that ice cream van vendors are only permitted to jingle their wares in limited spurts - 15 seconds per spurt, iirc. Around here the rule is constantly flouted. You know you're in Sarf London - his version of O Sole Mio (Just Juan Cornetto) being underpinned with a Reggae beat.

I was once told that Benjamin Britten sued the ice cream vendors of Aldeburgh for interfering with his inpiration.

Perhaps if we listen hard enough we'll find bits of ice-cream van tunes in his operas. I suppose the tunes might have been different in his time, though. Research project for someone! Theses have been written on stranger topics.

But if the ever hear Kirsten Spratt play the piccolo, she makes it sound really beautiful.
