I'm widely interested.
There are areas which I like and areas which I do less so. But the latter are definitely not avoided.
For me it's always a pleasure to discover and explore and to put things in perspective.
But whether that's broad-minded?

The use of the mind suggests an element of rationalisation. If one takes the Radio 1 Ibiza Prom, there are all sorts of small facts that get fed in, almost without conscious consideration:
it's aimed at under-30 clubbers, it falls into a musical sector which even the smallest acquaintance suggests will not be to one's taste. How much time should one spend listening to it in order to discover if there is music that might appeal or interest? Five minutes? Or does one make a point of listening to the entire concert? What are the odds that at the end of the concert one's lack of interest will be confirmed? Do we, like Suzy Klein, 'love dancing to an addictive club anthem'? Can one be sure that deciding not to bother after all is narrow-mindedness?
A whole new set of facts can be brought into play if one wants to argue that the Proms are not the place for such a concert. Suzy's 'But it's great music, I love it' does not alone go much beyond Gonger's "ooh, I love this". And the alleged 'precedent' of the early Proms needs to be investigated. If the argument that the Proms is not the place for such a concert seems stronger, is that 'intolerance'?
And so on …It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

There are also areas of music which I simply HAVE to listen to on a regular basis otherwise my mental health suffers.
BTW is small minded the same as narrow minded ?

... hmm, 'broad tastes'.
Ying and yang.
People here are extolling the virtue of a broad range of things they (might) like.
A lot to be said, too, for the virtue of a broad range of things they (might) dislike.
I know myself largely by all the things I like / love. I also know myself by the things I dislike / hate.
I like Congreve, I dislike Hardy.
I like Chardin, I dislike Rubens.
I like Scarlatti, I dislike Vaughan Williams.

One complication in broad or narrowminded definitions of personal outlook is what aspects of life they refer to, making generalisations of any kind almost impossible to consider let alone discuss. "Anything goes" can indicate broadmindedness or advocating the thin end of a slippery slope, dependent on moral and ethical standpoint, but is it ever really possible to tolerate intolerance in total equanimity without complacency?Last edited by Serial_Apologist; 24-07-15, 13:40.
