Presumably this is journalistic convention, rather like illustrating the annual exam results with photos of girls (and it is usually girls) jumping in the air clutching the slip of paper with their results on it.

I suppose its because photos aren't allowed inside the polling station so the BBC are scrabbling around for something else to show.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

... more than probably. And if it were pretty boys?

I suppose the papers know their stuff : readers prefer 'pretty' to 'statistically ordinarily plain' ...

And what are the implications of having to have graphic illustrations of everything? Do they always have to feature people and animals/birds/fish/insects?

We now have a colourfully clad ethnic lady exiting the polling station. Must be hard for a picture editor.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Not just the BBC. My local online rag, and the online Guardian, both do as well. I felt rather sorry for a dog at my polling station this morning. The site is a windswept spot on the edge of town, with nothing to break the flow of today's strong cold winds. The human to which the animal was attached was someone at the entrance directing people to the correct part of the building, so was stuck in the same spot. She had presumably opted for that but the dog hadn't, and clearly just wanted to get inside out of the wind - and also I think away from all the people going to and fro.

Yep a terrible journalistic cliche . We actually used to get press releases from local public schools inviting us to film results day. It was always tedious as for some reason they all got straight A’s .
I hadn’t noticed the dog trope but I’ll look out for it now .

Presumably you can’t take a dog into a polling station . By having it tethered to a railing you offer the camera op two extra shots of gv’s (general views) of the polling station ie an extra 10 secs or so for journalists’ commentary . Bit difficult to write to though : “chained”, “barking mad”, “collared”, “mongrel” , “dogs life “ “in the doghouse “ are the only things that spring to mind . All a bit derogatory on this serious day…

Ah “pedigree “ that might work somewhere ….

The Alt text has "A woman in a colourful yellow dress walks out of a polling station in Hackney, London".

I'm afraid that I did, but we were very early and there was no one else about & the staff were happy to make a fuss of him.
