OK - maybe - but some of the polls were still being published after my vote went in. It was unlikely that more parties would emerge as front or near front runners which I hadn't already considered after my ballot paper went into the post box. Some people may have had a meaningful opportunity to make a late switch but we didn't expect that and our expectations were justified.

We nearly didn't get our postal votes before we departed for a staycation. They arrived about 2h before we departed in the afternoon.

In the event it would not have made any difference - the sitting Tory candidate Conned his way back in with a majority of several thousand over the nearest contender.

It's an issue I've seen crop up in banks as well, if a customer is asked for proof of identity, and finds that all the bits of plastic they may have about their person are not suitable.
        Yep.

Anyway good, news, if it is to be believed, ( !!) that the Digital ID framework is on the back burner, even though Blair, irony of ironies, is still calling for it in an attempt ( really ?) to control immigration.

Maybe an adult national conversation about our our demographic issues and migration would be a better place to start.

I doubt if any government would risk that. I'm coming to beleive that the people who speak out about such subjects are a vocal minority, and the 'silent majority' who may talk about it among themselves at bus stops of waiting for ALDI to open, hold very different views.

Moderation in all things. My rural childhood was immeasurably enriched by having a dog 'of my own'. But were my beloved friend still alive, I wouldn't consider it a necessity to include his name on my Christmas cards:

"Here's hoping you've had a good year and will have another next year

Love french frank and Whisky xxx "

People have become utterly besotted with their individual enthusiasms. I suppose it can be a distraction from boring things like going out to vote.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

A lot of truth in what you say. Can I be inquisitive and ask what sort of dog Whisky (lovely name BTW) was?

To balance VD's doggy photo, here's Marco waiting for the bun fight to open... (Sorry )

Before the election somebody posted two notices with the words POLLING DAY through my letter box, presumably assuming there to be more than one person living here. So I cut one of the Ls out of one of the notices, pasted it over the P, and it now adorns the wall beside which I am sitting!

He was a Welsh collie that we acquired as an 18-month-old and already named. His owners told my parents they'd called him Whisky because he was black and white. Aged about 6, I didn't understand the joke and never associated the name with whisky, and never have.
