Who were/are the Celts?

... Having said as much, the English word "Celt" didn't arrive until 1707!

... but all educated English-speaking people wd probably also have encountered the opening sentence of Caesar's Gallic War -

"Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres, quarum unam incolunt Belgae, aliam Aquitani, tertiam qui ipsorum lingua Celtae, nostra Galli appellantur... "
