I suspect he would require some briefing before such an event...

(Although I would love to take Beethoven to an HMV shop (well, ten years ago) and see the expression when he saw the number of recordings of his music that were available. (Having explained what CDs, a Hi-Fi, electricity, motor cars, airplanes etc, etc are))

the reference to Goebbels is precisely to make the point that this is propaganda [agreed it is over the top but it was propaganda] .... what is wrong or inconvenient with the plain truth? no one could mind the segments broadcast on each day of the week ... if you think it is a small matter then do so .... i think it reflects a corporate mind set that is unsettling .... and distasteful ....

Definition of 'propaganda' from the on-line OED -

Information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view: ‘he was charged with distributing enemy propaganda’

1.1The dissemination of propaganda as a political strategy:

So what particular political point of view or strategy is the BBC promoting by pretending that a guest is present in the studio each day? It's not just 'over the top' to call it propaganda but completely inaccurate - so much so as to suggest that your hyperbole is designed to promote a political point of view.

I've only been pulling your leg today, C, but it seems truly unimportant. It's a very conventional artifice.

I don't think it has to be political, judging by the quotes - that's just one meaning:

"The term propaganda has not the sinister meaning in Europe which it has acquired in America... In European business offices the word means advertising or boosting generally."

Disseminating information of a misleading nature would be possible, though I would agree that there should be a specific underlying purpose (e.g. a political or religious point of view), beyond simply the intention to mislead. I.e. Why the intention to mislead?

Reminds one slightly about the fuss over polar bear cubs a while back ... I think the BBC would say it enhances the experience for the audience to create an impression; the other point is that audiences don't then like to feel they've been tricked.

              However, I did like:

"White propaganda, the truth; gray, a composition of half-truths and distortions; or black, a pack of lies."

Probably comes from the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide of the Vatican - more or less sinister according to your view of the Catholic Church.

More or less sinister only to the Ignorami, I humbly submit ...

I am certainly no Latin scholar but, according the Oxford English Dictionary, the translation of Congregatio de Propaganda Fide is Congregation for Propagation of the Faith.

A bit like the Advertising Department at the Head Office of Tesco, and really not much more sinister than that!

That's why I carefully added more or less sinister according to your view of the Catholic Church.

Now, scotty would clearly have situated himself towards the less sinister end of the spectrum. But I am sure that scotty knows that ignorami is not the plural of ignoramus.

the lie is something to do with asserting that the Suits@R3 are accessibility oriented popularity focused media managers with a good stream of personality broadcasting that is truly meritorious ... or summat ... and it is a small deceit but repeated [as G said repeat a lie] and it is ultimately about power and legitimacy [that is not propaganda eh?]

It would not be impossible to prove with sufficient repetition and a psychological understanding of the people concerned that a square is in fact a circle. They are mere words, and words can be moulded until they clothe ideas and disguise

                        guess who!
