Deirdre McCloskey Analysis R4 26th May

should be worth catching Ms McCLoskey ... her depth and breadth of knowledge is staggering in regard to what Ernest Gellner calls the Great Transformation [odd though that she does not reference his work as far as i have so far discovered .. ]

Evan Davis interviews economic historian Deirdre McCloskey in front of an audience at the London School of Economics, where she argues that poverty matters more than inequality. She describes how at the beginning of the 19th century most people who had ever lived had survived on $3 a day. Today, on average, people in Western Europe and North America live on over $100 a day. Although Professor McCloskey is an economic historian, she says we can't explain this 'Great Enrichment' using economics alone. She also argues that capitalism is an inherently ethical system, and that it would be a mistake to prioritise equality over innovation. Prof McCloskey talks about the role of ideas and attitudes in creating modern prosperity and discusses what her study of history tells us about where our priorities should lie today.

Each time I've heard the trail using her voice for this programme I think 'oh it's René Cutforth'!

This is yet another great programme in this current series, I imagine. I'll be listening.

Well a very interesting interview, plenty to think about, but I wasn't convinced I'm afraid and there wasn't much 'evidence' offered, it was all rather nebulous for me.

Do listen to the end when there is a revelation, the subject of which I was not aware, and it makes my message in #2 look rather silly.

may i say Ams that ms McCloskey is incredibly evidence based and rigorous in her writing .... her erudition is beyond reproach - it is not mere opinion, it is an informed and worked on set of ideas and questions ... i often can not agree with her wholeheartedly but she is deeply serious and grounded in evidence

she is also a wit of some distinction ... find her on youtube

I suspect that the format of the interview led to my dissatisfaction, Calum - she was not given an opportunity to expand on her findings and theories.I'll certainly 'look her up' as you suggest
