It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I found that, trying to read it recently, The Uses of Literacy had a quite dated style. But RH revisited many of the issues in Mass Media in a Mass Society in 2004, from which:

"Radio 3 still does some good work, but now more jumpily than when it was born. Once again the old assurance has gone, the fear of being called highbrow and elitist ... Radio 3's role as a channel of the intellecteual and the imaginative life should be reinforced..." (pp 28-29) It continues ...

Another name to be removed from the FoR3 supporters RIP

His was quite a presence at the recent Lowry exhibition at Tate Britain.

He was Radio 3 (as we remember it) through and through, a remarkable man and a well-lived life.

        Many thanks

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Have just ordered a copy of RH's Reith lectures, 'Only Connect', price 1p. For some reason the last lecture is still available to listen to on the BBC archive, but not the preceding five. Interesting to see how they stand up after over 40 years.
