Sibelius Symphony No.3.
Berlin Symphony Orchestra/Kurt Sanderling. Denon Japan CD (from Ariola-Eurodisc). Rec.1970
So hard to get right, I feel the 3rd works best, the less the conductor does. Set each movement in motion, let it flow, let it grow...Sanderling never obstructs it. So when the finale theme emerges fully, sublimely - one of my favourite moments in all Sibelius.....eloquent, effortless perfection.
I love the sobriety of this reading; set close and a little dry, but those so-distinctive, agile, velvety, slightly muted strings are the more pleasurable. My favourite non-Scandinavian 3rd.
