In about a month or so the booking period will open at the RAH for the 2020 proms.
In view of yesterday's PM press conference and the potential numbers of Covid cases on the loose, what do we think about potential cancellation of the season? Would RAH refund?

Might be best for it to go ahead but with those over, say, 70, absenting themselves. That way it might help in building up 'herd immunity' in the population, especially since it is suggested that the disease might be more suitably handled in the summer.

That said, as my party-jumping ex-MP Dr Philip Lee noted on Twitter, viruses can mutate very quickly and 'herd immunity' is not that easily established.

The Proms Guide is out on April 22, booking opens on May 16 and the season opens on July 17. Who knows where we will be by even the first of those dates? I think that the most forward cancellation so far is the Salzburg Easter Festival but a lot depends on how matters pan out in a month's time regarding the Proms. Should the season be open for booking as planned then there should be no question about refunds being made should cancellation be made further down the line. It would help to pay my debit/credit card but assume most people would do so anyway.

I have a friend who works at Covent Garden and he tells me that they're now considering closing the house down after their last Fidelio tomorrow night. As all the predictions are that this virus is going to last as long as other previous pandemics, ie: a couple of years, then I think it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that this year's Proms will be cancelled. Well, we shall soon know for sure.

Oh dear, I hadn't even thought about the orchestras. I bet most are freelance too :-(

Just to confirm, as stated earlier and elsewhere here, Covent Garden Opera House has now stated that there will be no more rehearsals or performances for the foreseeable future.

Can anyone seriously see the Proms going ahead now? We may be in a better place come July but with the Guide out on April 22 it must be giving organisers a massive headache.

Does anyone know if the Guide has actually been printed yet? ... If it hasn't been then I think we can probably assume that the print run has already been cancelled.

The decision would probably be made for them anyway. You can announce that the Proms are going ahead but if the performers and orchestras pull out then the season is done for. I'm sure there are all sorts of insurance implications to be considered too. I know insurance companies elicit little sympathy at the best of times but having all these claims dumped on them at once must be devastating.

The RAH has already closed its doors "at least until 30 April" so the implication there is for a longer closure. I'd be surprised if the Proms went ahead, as previous world-wide pandemics have invariably lasted at least 2 years before being eradicated ...

It depends on many factors. Some have these sort of things only covered as an optional extra. Other insurance companies are talking about not paying up due to "extenuating circumstances' or some such weasel words aka Not paying so sue me.

In any event, it's the underwriters (I think) who actually pick up the tab.

It they're intent on going to that particular jingiostic signifier of annual self-inflicted isolationism it serves them right if they lost their money. (I am presuming here people are booking early for the Last Night).
