Sounds of the Moon slow radio soundscape on Radio 3. Why do I bother? What next? Sounds of bin day? Sounds of traffic on the M1? I'd tear up the license if I hadn't already done so...

About to start listening to the Fabulous Philadelphians via WRTI (Nico Muhly, Grieg, Rachmaninoff):
Join us on Sunday, June 13th at 1 PM and Monday, June 14th at 7 PM as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, in a concert from 2018, conducts a program featuring a world…
Unfortunately, this cuts into the Bournemouth SO Prom this afternoon (afternoon from this side of the pond, of course). Decisions must be made....
PS: For pg, you may want to spare a thought for the Baltimore SO, as they seem headed into institutional meltdown:

Recently …
Beethoven: Symphony no. 3 in E flat major op. 55 ('Eroica')
Richard Strauss: Horn Concerto no. 1 in E flat major op. 11 *
William Caballero (*), Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra / Manfred Honeck
Hugely impressive performance of the Eroica.
Elgar: "Enigma' Variations op. 36
Holst: The Planets op. 32
Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, Edvard Grieg Kor / Andrew Litton
Superb new release (which BIS boss Robert Von Bahr describes as being "almost interminably delayed for all kinds of stupid reasons" — the Elgar recording dates from 2013, the Holst from 2017). Whatever the reasons for the delay, it's certainly well worth the wait. The Planets is wonderful (Saturn and Uranus especially fine), while the performance of the Elgar really comes into its own magnificently in the Finale.

Schumann Violin Sonatas Nos. 2; 1; 3. ALBA 24/88.1/CD.
Eriikka Maalismaa (Bellosio/Gagliano ca.1770)/Emil Holmström (Erard 1862).
Leaping to the top of my list for these astounding works, this is miraculous musicianship and sound on every level.... such freedom and precision-within-freedom....the whole gamut from delicacy to power.... individual yet faithful....
(Mentioned this on New Releases a coupla weeks ago to a deafening silence. )
Probably my Record of the Year so far, certainly for chamber music... (in a very good year for new releases already...)...
And a perfect companion for the Schayegh/Schultsz Brahms Sonatas from earlier this year.
(I hope The Barrett is onto this one..... Returning the Brahmsian favour Richard...!)
***
NB... there's a new Missa Solemnis out from Frieder Bernius & Hofkapelle on Carus/SWR2 worthy of any HIPPS-authenticist's attention...Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 22-07-19, 07:36.
