Great playing, indifferent conducting. Review from RO has it spot on I think.

JS Bach: BWV 1052, 1055, 1042 and 1050 (Café Zimmermann).
I note that this, and 15 more Café Zimmermann discs (incliding all 6 that were in the 'plusieurs instruments' box), will be released next month for around £35. If you already have the 6 disc box, that still works out at only about £3.50 a disc, or £3.60 including p&p.Last edited by Bryn; 21-10-18, 15:13.

Odd that four of these 16 "Café Zimmermann" discs seem actually to be solo harpsichord discs (with the excellent Céline Frisch : Bach Goldbergs and d'Anglebert)
EDIT : correction - the second 'Goldbergs' and the second d'Anglebert disc of CF is with the Zimmermen. So, only two 'solo harpsichord' discs...

Gounod:
Mélodies
Tassis Christoyannis (baritone), Jeff Cohen (piano)
Saint Cecilia Mass
Luba Orgonášová (soprano), Christian Elsner (tenor), Gustáv Belácček (bass)
Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks / Mariss Jansons
Exploring some of the composer's music in light of his double-anniversary year (200th anniversary of birth on 17th June; 125th anniversary of death on 18th October). The songs were totally unknown to me, but have proved a delightful discovery. The recording includes a mere seventeen of the 150 or so he wrote, some of which are real gems, and Tassis Schristoyannis does them great justice, with exemplary diction and great variety of tone. It's years since I last heard the Saint Cecilia Mass, and I'd forgotten how good it is. This live recording from the Herkulessaal in the Residenz in Munich (March 2007) proved the ideal way to rediscover this fine work.
