      Franz LISZT
      Transcendental Studies
      Kirill Gerstein (piano)
      Rec. 2015, Siemens-Villa, Berlin-Lankwitz
      MYRIOS CLASSICS SACD MYR019

IMHO Gerstein trounces Trifonov at every turn here. Fabulous piano sound, too. A must for pianophiles in general and Lisztians in particular.

The 192/24 download is but £7.99 for QOBUZ Sublime subscribers. I will be making do with 44.1/16 since I only have a QOBUZ HiFi sub.

Those French works are certainly worth getting to know.

Boulez: Éclat (Berliner Philharmoniker, Rattle), this to try out my retirement gift to myself, an OPPO UDP-203. It's the aac playback facility via USB stick I first wanted to assess. Seems very fine. Next up the stereo version of last Saturday's Gruppen, then a 192/24 FLAC or two. Later I will test its CD-R playback quality. The main reason for getting a new deck was the recently emerged failure of my not that old Cambridge azur 650BD deck, which was/is severely resticted in its codec playback range (basically mp3 and that's it!).

Hope it all goes well, Bryn ... always a tingle with a new bit of high-grade hifi, isn't there? And so much to try out nowadays....
                        Have fun!

Oh, I am! Currently, it's Liszt: Transcendental Studies, as recommended by mahlerei of this parish (88.2/24 FLACs). I should have made it clear that the main problem which emerged of late with the Cambridge unit was that while it has no problem with pressed Blu-ray, DVD, DVD-A, CD or SACD, it can no longer handles CDA CD-Rs. It's not the discs. They play perfectly well on all other players I have (old and less old). I wonder whether the considerably over-burned CD-Rs (up to 96 minutes on a single CD-R) I have sometimes played on it in the past may have damaged it in some way? It showed not objection at the time though. It's only in the past couple of months it has started to 'snap, crackle and pop' its way through CD-Rs.

Currently, it's Number 7 'Eroica', which sounds much too busy for its 4'33" duration.
