          Janacek: Sarka (Bakala 1953).

My first audition from the 320kbps mp3 DVD-R mentioned recently here by 'makropulos'. This opera is split into a series of mp3 tracks, with consequent gaps. Looks like I will have to join the 'tracks' from each act using mp3DirectCut. Surprisingly good sound quality, so far. Don't expect either standard CD or DVD packaging. It comes in a windowed envelope stuck inside a folded sheet of A4 card, along with similar A5 format booklet and listing.
Last edited by Bryn; 14-08-17, 15:10. Reason: Turns out it is only Sarka which has its acts split into separate tracks

Bryn, it won't surprise you to know that a few weeks ago I suggested joining tracks 1-6 for Act I etc. - the same as all the other operas (one track per act). Shame that wasn't done - and if you feel like it, do - please - write to David Patmore at CRQ to suggest he does it for Sarka as well.

              Jean Sibelius.

String Quartet in d minor, 'Intimate Letters'.

This, to my shame, is a work I don't know at all.

Must have been a nice surprise for you then, PG.

Who's got lots to tell about the links between Bernstein and Poulenc ?
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

To be honest, TS, it didn't make that much of an impression on me which is odd since I'm a big fan of the mighty Finn's music. What was really odd is that a friend I told about this cd is convinced that we had played through it at a string quartet course many years ago!

Anyway, after tonight's somewhat mediocre Proms concert, Bach's 'cello Suites played by Jean-Guihen Queyras.

                        Surely Intimate voices?
Intimate letters is the subtitle of Janacek's second SQ.

Poulenc features very little in Humphrey Burton's book on Bernstein.

In April 1963 Bernstein ..... [took] part in a tribute to Poulenc, who had died suddenly in January.
He accompanied Benny Goodman in the world premiere of Poulenc's clarinet sonata.
At Easter, the Philharmonic gave the posthumous premiere of Poulenc's Sept Répons des Ténèbres, commissioned for the first season of Lincoln Center [sic; not The Lincoln Center!].

Burton goes on to say that the work offended the subsantial Jewish section of the audience! Bernstein did not conduct, though, as he was observing Passover.

So, not a lot to tell there, sadly.

Yes, I know brass bands playing this classic but just you wait and see how these guys play! Absolutely amazing to hear. The band captures the album's atmosphere, totally.
